Hey everyone, My web hosting service is having some major problems right now. Unfortunately, it's not the first time they've had an outage, but this is more serious than ever before. The lack of response from the sysops is disheartning, to say the least. I am wondering if anyone here can recommend a good web hosting service located in the continental U.S.? The specs on my current service is something like: 300MB of storage, 15GB/mo. transfer, unlimited e-mail address aliases, unlimited autoresponders, unlimited mailing lists, PHP4 scripting, MySQL databases, and at a cost of $10/mo. I am willing to pay a little more, or sacrifice some storage or bandwidth, but I have to have the PHP, MySQL, and the e-mail features. Some suggestions people have already made:

    • hostrocket.com
    • hostway.com
    • ipowerweb.com

    Thanks in advance! -- Paul

Paul, I've been very happy with Web 66. For $11.95/mo you get everything you specified, except 200Mb instead of 300Mb. You can get more for a small charge. Additional domains are only $8.95. I host 5 sites with them and haven't had any problems. /ravi "There is always one more bug..." http://www.ravib.com ravib@ravib.com

Paul, I recomend Ventures On Line highly. See http://www.venturesonline.com/ I have my site (see sig) hosted there. There service and support is excellent and up time as well. They also have Forums which I think are a very valuable resource. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows. www.getsoft.com

Hi Ravi, You sound very happy with the service you have received from Web66. I am about fed up with my current host, and the features of Web66 look very attractive. I have a few questions, though: 1) Are there any SPAM protection facilities included with the accounts? Can I block unwanted email addresses and/or create custom filters? 2) Do the accounts come with SSH access as well, or do they only come with TELNET/FTP access? 3) How is the customer support? Are they prompt, and are they adept at problem solving? 4) Lastly, how is the uptime? Do you ever experience long outages? Thanks, Jon Sagara "Me fail English? That's unpossible." Hi Jon, Yes, I'm still very pleased with Web66. A friend of mine just transfered 3 domains to them last week. He was being ripped off by Yahoo.

                1. [ SPAM protection ]
I don't think so. I forward all my Web66 bound mail to my ISP, who provide basic filtering.
                2. [ SSH access ]
I don't think so. I use a GUI FTP client (FTP Explorer) to manage my site. I haven't used MySQL or PHP (yet), although they support both.
                3. [ customer support ]
The few times I've needed support (change of billing information, lost password), they've been very prompt. Support is provided by email. Turnaround time has been a few hours, usually more like "one".
                4. [ uptime ]
I've never experienced any downtime, and barring problems with my ISP, the servers are nice and fast.

If you do end up signing up with them, you may want to mention that I (Ravi Bhavnani, ravib@ravib.com) recommended them to you. I won't get any benefits, but it might be worth it anyway. Hope this helps! /ravi Let's put "civil" back into "civilization" http://www.ravib.com ravib@ravib.com
