Any recommendations for a good general purpose programming text editor? It's gotta have syntax highlighting for various languages and be quick. Josh Knox that-guy.net

Beat me too. I have been using UltraEdit since 7.0 and must say it is great. A lot of extras have been built in over the years making it much more than just an editor. Michael Martin Australia mjm68@tpg.com.au "Don't belong. Never join. Think for yourself. Peace" - Victor Stone

Ultraedit for most things, although I tend to switch to Emacs for Perl editing due to the superb 'cperl-mode' module. As well as syntax highlighting, it automatically indents and inserts braces and brackets in all the right places.

ED isn't free (there is a 45-day trial version available) but I have used it and it is very good. Disclaimer: I get no monetary rewards from the sale of ED, but maybe if I push it enough I might get to take the authors' car for a spin around the block. Chances: slim to none :) Seriously though, when I was doing Java at Uni, I tried UltraEdit and JFE (Jens' File Editor) and didnt like them, but each to his own :) -- David Wengier TAC ad gone wrong: "Don't fool yourself, you're a bloody idiot." I use Boxer 9.0 for most of my non-Visual Studio development (HTML, text, scripts, etc.). I started using Boxer/TKO years ago (circa 1993) and love the feature set. It's a 5 star product by many magazine. You can download a trial version and I think is't about $60 for a new user. You can check it out here. Brigg Thorp Software Engineer Timex Corporation

I'm probably going to sound like a Unix-weenie by suggesting this (which I am) but if you have ever used the "vi" editor included with most Unix variants, you might want to give VIM a try. "Vi IMproved" has a scripting language, syntax highlighting for dozens of languages, an OLE-aware version available that can be used as the Visual Studio default editor, :omg: and is completely FREE. The source is available, and it has been compiled on every major platform: Unix, Windows, OS X, VMS... -- Paul "I drank... WHAT?"
