Is Oracle the worst progam on the planet ?

We're using Oracle for a project, and it SUCKS. Final proof that Java blows. It is slow, unreliable, ugly and plain crap. Any comments ? I was a little confused about the Oracle-Java connection, here, too. Is the problem Oracle or Java? (Personally, I've never been impressed with any database product. It seems to me like they all run slow.)
I think the problem is with Java; at least I don't remember hearing such an up-roar before the "big switch". I've been doing quite a lot of DB programming, and the last things I would say about Oracle is that it sucks. Yes, Its UI is Horrible and the most non user friendly I have ever seen (at least up to 8i), but when talking about performance MS SQL Server is no match to the Oracle Database. By the way, it is true. Oracle has fully incorporated Java into the 8i and 9i versions. I think this is great, I wish I could write all my stored procedures in C++ and not T-SQL. Any way, the new Versions of Oracle (8i,9i) are much more than a DB server, even if they're hard to work with on MS platforms. Omer.

You *CAN* use Java in Oracle if you wish. It's called JSQL when you use it in stored procedures. This is from Oracle 8i onwards. You can also use XSQL, PL/SQL, SQL, XML, etc. etc. when retrieving data from Oracle. It has supports for tons of stuff. If you call Oracle the most unreliable piece of software on the planet - you simply don't know what you're talking about, it's that simple. Oracle runs most of the worlds businesses, including almost EVERY company in the Fortune 500. It is the most common backoffice solution in SAP, Baan, PeopleSoft and Siebel. It runs on every major version of Unix, inluding Linux, HP/UX, Solaris, AIX and even Sequent + Tru/64. Ofcourse it also runs on Windows NT-based servers (such as NT4 and 2000). The client is in Java because it is common amongst users of Oracle to have UNIX-based clients - and it would be a waste of resources to developed both in the Windows/MFC SDKs and Java or any other UNIX-proprietary library. :omg: Henning Kilset Pedersen Forbrukerkraft AS IT Manager

I'm with you. The client and admin tools for Oracle suck. The company I'm contracting at tend to use the command line SQL Plus stuff. They also use the third party product, Toad. Michael :-)

I also work on a project where they ask us to use oracle and JSP. I really feel sorry about people who have to use those all the time. I made a silent commit to myself, that i will live the company if they force me to use java or oracle in another project. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Memory leaks is the price we pay \0 01234567890123456789012345678901234

Get the Freeware client application called TOAD. Its the best equivalent to SQL Enterprise Manager, but for Oracle. From http://www.toadsoft.com/ You wont regret it.

I have to agree with some of the other messages in this thread, it's not Oracle that sucks its the Java clients. I have been working with databases for nearly 10 years and Oracle is by far the most reliable and recoverable database system that I have used. However most of the Oracle written tools to interface with it are crap ! I use primarily the command line and Toad to administer our databases, and occasionally Visual Studio to update data. I think there are many more programs which are much much worse than Oracle, MS Access for example which puts data mangement in the hands of 'local experts' - that is until they need to do anything useful with it ! Nic

Yes, but I'm not, am I. Oracle is a wildly different product from any OS, and you know that as well as I do. Oracle is a proven-over-time, ultrascalable and well-supported enterprise solution. Windows 95 is a toy. Henning Kilset Pedersen Forbrukerkraft AS IT Manager
