Which Project Tracking Tools would you recommend?
-
I'm looking for a good tool that can effectively be used for project tracking. I started off by using color-coded tables in Excel (gree=on track, red=in danger,..), but that takes a lot of manual work and it's hard to keep things in sync. I moved on to MS Project, but that hasn't worked out to well for me either: it's a great tool, and does a lot of things, but it is also very generic and lacks of all the functionality that I need for tracking my assets and the work done on them. We have started to develop an in-house tool, but I'm afraid that is not the right way to go, as it will involve lot's f maintenance and it will end up costing more then buying an out-of-the-box solution. Any recommendation? What are you guys using for tracking your project?

Hello, Take a look to Visual Studio Team System, it includes features to keep track of your project (the good thing is that it integrates with Ms Project so you can use the generic capabilities of Project and the specific software development capabilities of Team system). As long as you can afford the licensing. :(

We use BaseCamp which is a very simple and easy to use product. www.basecamphq.com/index.php

Don't afraid of develop your own solution. At my previos company, we made a custom tool. It took a month for one professional. It's between Team Manager and Project, but we could use as many licences as we want, and no exchange server needed :). My current company use Mantis, a http based bug (task) tracking tool. I use "MasterList Professional" from Safari Software. Works well for single-user stuff, 45 day free trial, costs a mere US$25. Gives the "green" and "red" statuses as well as a few more. MS Access database at the back, totally open so you can add your own code bells and whistles. Bob says he's working on a Team version, but he's been a bit distracted with other things...

Agree on that :-(, ... seems like Ms tries to compete with Rational. It's a pity that is not cheaper. /// ----------------------- Braulio Díez http://www.bdiez.com /// -----------------------

Hi there, we use TestTrackPro from Seapine. It's a bug tracking tool but also works for work coordination. You can assign, comment, estimate. We boosted project performance quite a way. Regards from Liechtenstein
I would recommend the following web interfaces for project tracking. Trac, and Gforge. Trac is great. Its python based I think. There are some open source tools that can be used in conjuction very similar to the MS excel/project solution someone mentioned. As always sourceforge.net has a plethora of open source solutions for this
