When you buy anti-virus from McAfee, they offer to charge you $10 more for their "extended download" service, that allows you 12 extra months to download the product you just bought. I just had reason to uninstall McAfee from my laptop, and when I went to reinstall it, I realized that I did not have a local copy of the installer! This is because their apps are designed to download and install directly from their website, and they do NOT give you any kind of install package that you can keep on your hard drive. This means that because I didn't pay the extra $10 for their extortion scheme, I am unable to reinstall a product that I legitimitely bought from their website!! So, not only do you have to pay the money for the product itself, but you have to pay $10 more for the "privilege" of being to reinstall it if you ever need to!

Norton works the same way, but you can save the installer.

I was never happy with McAfee from day 1. Switched to AVG http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1[^] and never looked back. Free for personal use. 2 year license for commercial use is quite reasonable ($20/year) Downloads for updates are great for AVG. It updates every day (for me about 10:00am) and it pops up on the screen for about 5 seconds then notifies me that update was complete. You can opt to suppress the notification but I actually prefer to know that it has been updated and that it is working. It is not a big inconvenience (but as i mentioned you can suppress it if you want too). Update usually is less than 15 seconds. I havent used McAfee for a while but the last time i used it the silent background updates took about 2-3 minutes... It was a serious problem when i was online gaming. I am not affiliated with AVG. cheers, David

Are you sure? Their tech. support says to choose 'save' after clicking the download link. It also says to make a note of where you save the executable, in case you need to install it again at a later date. I don't have McAfee, but Norton does something similar. Their executable is a stub that downloads the actual installer. Still works for re-installs though, even without purchasing the extended download. Cheers, Drew.

It doesn't work either. AVG is a premium product by comparison.
