I vaguely remember waking up in a crib, because i liked to chew on the wood rails. Those memories are pretty jumbled though. My most vivid early memory is probably the time i found a small metal barrette and tried to fit it into a wall socket. The resulting fear of wall sockets and barrettes has remained intense my whole life.

Ouch! I vaguely remembered something similar with an old electric application (can't remember what). When I took the plug off the metal remained in the wall socket and I *think* I touched it. I never asked my mom about it but it remains in my memory until now. And also the time when my foot got ran over by a taxi because I wanted the wildflower my brother showed me and went out of the car to get it him. Edbert Sydney, Australia

In a blatant attempt to create a Lounge thread that gets mentioned in Jordon's newsletter, I pose the question: What is your earliest memory? Mine: Burning my hand on the stove. I thought "ooo, pretty red color" and then "ow!!!" I don't know how old I was, probably between 3 and 4. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | NEW!! I think I remember something from an hour ago :sigh: It is way cool getting mentioned in Jordon's newsletter - I've managed to peak her interest enought to get mentioned twice so far  Steve

How about to get an item from Jordon's newsletter discussed in the Lounge? Seems like that's pretty rare as well... :(( -------------- TTFN - Kent

We're ahead of the game here, by the time it makes the newsletter it's old news... I actually tend to open up several tabs each day with the various stories linked to by the article. But by the time i get through reading them, i tend to have forgotten where they came from.

I can describe vividly part of a house that I lived in until I was 6 months old. My parents swear they have never described it to me and they don't have any photos of it. Yet my description is perfect.

I remember sitting on my grandfather's shoulders and looking at the elephants at the zoo. I was not even 2 (though not far from). As tall as I was up high, the elephants looked HUGE!! I remembered it because of their size... they were larger than even my grandfather's truck! I remember returning only a couple years later and being disappointed that the elephants had SHRUNK!! I even told the elephant caretaker (zoo worker), that I thought there was something seriously wrong with his elephants and I was worried. He listened very intently as I described that I loved elephants, had since the last time I was here only two years earlier and the elephants were very VERY large... but only two years later the elephants had shrunk! He took it well, he promised to measure his elephants and look for any more signs of shrinking, and check all their food for the right amount of calcium. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. My first computer was a 386 16 MHz (yes, sixteen megaherts) with 1 MB (megabyte) of RAM and 40 MB (not giga or tera, but megabytes) of hard disk space... and I'm relatively young! OT but interesting question to Chris M., what's the average age of members here?

[old fogey]Young wippersnappers.... why I rember my first computer I saved up for (delivering papers in 3 feet of snow, of course, and a few other odd jobs) was an Apple ][+, brand spankin' new upgrade to the Apple ][ with the a whopping 48k of memory (including the extra 16k upgrade), and a processor at 4mhz. But that was quite an upgrade from the first computer I programmed, my friend's TRS-80 Model I with 16k of memory (including the 8k advanced upgrade), 2mhz Z-80 processor and a cassette tape interface! My dad brought home an Apple IIc with VisiCalc before giving me that 386 for Christmas about a year later. I don't know the specs for that Apple IIc (I didn't care at the time) but I think it was from the very early 80s. I'm getting old too :~ ;P

Waking up after an operation to my willy, tied to the bed panicking, wanting to go home and play with my red firetruck (I don't even know if I have one). At least that's what I always think of first. I have a dim earlier one of.. lying in bed sick, asking for a cookie from my (4th) birthday presents. But the other one has virtually overshadowed everything else. [edit]it was for medical reasons only. Not religous - even though now I look "partially jewish" (I guess) [/edit]

I remember big rocky mountains seen through the window of the car. I realised what that memory was only a few years later when my parents brought into discussion a trip we took through the rocky mountains of Cheile Bicazului[^]. They couldn't believe I remebered that. I don't know how old I was but my parents think I was about 2 or 3 years old. They also mentioned having a car crash, but I couldn't remembered that. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.
Those are beautiful. Thank you for sharing. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!
eh, stop bugging me about it, give it a couple of days, see what happens.

Well peterchen's reply probably just knocked it out of contention for Jordon's family newsletter. ;) I can't tell which is earlier but I have two early memories from my childhood in Zimbabwe. One is at the Paul Barn preschool (kindergarten). They had some rabbits in a hutch, chickens in another cage and some guinea pigs running around. I had my little brown suitcase with my name on it and I had one of those safe-to-spill-on brown overalls also with my name on. And a little brown hat. I was walking to the carpark to be picked up on a bicycle by the garden boy. The other memory is sitting on the same bicycle, being pedalled home by the garden boy and my ankle getting caught in the front-wheel. I don't remember the pain much but I remember lying down at home afterwards with my swollen ankle on a big, orange cushion. I don't have a very good memory though, just flashes and snippets from before I was about 12. My sister however can remember almost everything from when she was 3 years old. She tells me stories about our childhood and I just have to believe her :| regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

I often wonder what it has changed for me that my two earliest memories are of weakness and pain. At least, I usually go silent when people talk (face to face) about "earliest childhood memories". ;) It's easier to write than to say.

That is interesting since I'd been an IBM 360/85 FORTRAN programmer (punch card). Moved to a PDP 11/45 which I wrote an interface to the little HP using HP Basic. I went on to work with the DEC 11/70's, and DEC/VAX 11/780 machines for several years. And now Dot.Net - how cool is that? It's hard to believe how far computing has come, and can't wait to see where we can go. The first hard drive - a 5Mb Iomega brick. IBM PC/5150 with 2 360kb 5.25 drives and a cassette port. The first gigabyte class hard drive unit was $3000 Bernoulli boxes anyone? AST AboveBoard/SixPack boards to boost memory from 512kb to 640. - So you could do something really cool - a VDISK... I still some have interesting software including: DOS 1.1, Lotus 1.a, DBase II R:Base 4000 WordStar DisplayWrite MultiMate (boy did that name get some ribbing) The thumbdrive I carry is 200 times bigger than that first PC hard drive, what could we possibly do with all that space (5Mb) -- modified at 16:01 Wednesday 5th April, 2006
