Just an idle question; how many women are there around here? CP is quite male-dominated - which reflects development in general, as I'd expect - but I presume there are some other female contributors? Just curious. :)

In my Greek university we had at least a 30%. In my master in Lyon around 10%. In work I've encountered more than 10%. It's difficult to tell - enterprises in Greece are so small that analyst and developer jobs get confused.

I do read the newsletters and read the post sometimes. Don't feel neglected I don't post anywhere else either.

Definitely. Although I love development, being tied to a desk full time drives me nuts! Perhaps that's why I've always preferred to be involved in a project on multiple levels - including liasing with customers and other departments - than purely sitting at a desk churning out code. I don't like being tied to a desk either but I love to code. My solution.....start your own business or become a contractor. I work from home so if I get tired of sitting at my desk, I take the laptop to the pool or put it in a backpack and go to the beach or the park. I can work in my jammies till 2 if I want. If I find the need for human interaction, I just pick up the phone and call someone for a lunch date or take the afternoon off and spend it with friends. Flexibility is a wonderful thing.

No sweat! I was just kidding, too. I can be very sarcastic. I should have used a smiley or something so you would know that I didn't take offense. Don't worry about it.

I'm not very active on the forums... I think this is my 2nd post ever. But I've been a fan of CodeProject since I first stumbled onto it a few years ago. I work with just one other woman at my current job; we have about 20 developers total. There were no other women at my last job; we had about 10 developers total. ~mj

Wouldnt it be great to find a good woman (willing to date a programer :() who also programs? LOL not to many woman are interested in programing when you try to explain it to them! You get the old 'Yea thats cool.....' :zzz: Pablo

I actually used to work with this couple, from 2 different programming departments mind you, the woman programmed in Cobol and had done it for many years, her husband worked in the VB department with me and had been programming for only about 7 years. I believe that they both had desk at home in the same room and at night they would go to their respective corners and surf or code. Must have been a match made in heaven. As far as explaining it, it is the same for me. My husband's eyes glaze over when I start talking shop. He could care less and definitely doesn't understand any of it.

I'm from Egypt. We work in web development (using C#) We have 2 developers over 5 (or 6, as our analyst sometimes writes code) in the office I work in. Still, I know better ratio of female developers in other (and even bigger companies). Our project manager is a female too BTW. Generally, female developers I see are although not so independant (I do NOT mean they get others to do their jobs, but, they're not ashamed to ask about something they don't know), they're typically AT LEAST moderate developers, quite productive and generally more calm than male developers I usually see! Also, working with them is usually more comforable than with male ones. They make you feel each one is doing his part. No competetion is there; which usually exists (even in a very limited range) when working with male ones! (Yes, competetion is good for knowledge, but you get tired of it when you compete on something that doesn't really deserve sometimes, and when it's your everyday routine. Basically, programming trend is less in womens. Is that due to the fact that womens think less :doh: well, I admire that in some areas they are really great, but the fact is that, there are really less women in programming field. I have been trying to search to employee, but honestly, couldnt get good match, basically found just fresh graduates who were not sure where to go. However, I have seen women working as technical writers in my friend's office, but honestly saying, most of the time they dont like to think :-O Need custom software?
