Hello everyone. Last thursday I was discharged from the military after completing a 3-year mandatory service. For the past 3 weeks I was on vacation and started looking for a job. Sadly I don't have a lot of experience and I am quite outdated after the past 3 years (though I tried catching up with .NET the past few months). Yesterday I had a job interview and today they sent me a contract. This is not quite what I was expecting but non the less it is a job. So I wanna thank everyone here. Even though I don't post much, I read quite a lot and you guys keep me updated. I also got some help here for my programming questions which helped a lot. I wanna thank Colin especially for the solution he offered for my SQL query the other day. This job has some SQL elements (which I'm not that experienced with) and your solution did the job elegantly! I'm glad to say I'm finally in the business commercially :-O Peace out. Isaac

It's not mandatory in that you have to serve. It's mandatory in that if you choose to serve, you have to serve for the minimum that you sign up for. -- modified at 12:01 Tuesday 11th April, 2006 Nevermind! I thought he was in the US!

Since 1946, when Italy became a democracy (before there was the king), our Constitution says that Italy repudiates war as a way to resolve international controversies. In the last decades we have not been at war, so the Army has been gradually reduced, also to cut expenses. All the Italian Soldiers that are in Iraq or Kosovo are volounteer soldiers, that have chosen the Army as their employer. We have basically five police/military corps: Polizia di Stato (State Police for common crimes), Guardia di Finanza (treasure crimes, faked goods and so on), Polizia Locale (local Police, almost unuseful), Esercito (Army), Arma dei Carabinieri (part of the Army, with homeland protection purposes, like the US National Guard). I think we can feel safe. We don't need a huge Army. I think we could abolish it completely. For example, in Iraq and Kosovo we sent many Carabinieris and a few other Army soldiers. We can also save lots of money! Moreover, I think it's not correct to force a citizen to waste 10 months of his life for military service. ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. I was indeed in the IDF. 3 years is quite a lot so near the end I was fed up. Luckily for your brother they shortened the service for men. But to tell the truth, I wouldn't change one bit of my service. It changed me in ways I can't even begin to explain. Then again the military is so vast that it all depends on what you do and where you serve (which base). I have friends who didn't like the experience as well as I did. Most of all it depends on the person and how you take it. If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer. You can contact me by ICQ: #44992613 or by Messenger: i_sasson@hotmail.com Isaac

:omg::wtf: I could die! Luckily here in Italy the mandatory military service has just been abolished, and anyway it was 10 months. EDIT: good luck, anyway! ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA] -- modified at 11:51 Tuesday 11th April, 2006

That's understandable since Italy's surrounding nations are not hostile. But for Israel (where Isaac was serving), you've got 23 Arab nations around you where a majority of the populace and most of the governments are violently hostile. Some of those nations have called for us to be "wipped off the map" and "thrown into the sea" (Iran's president, for one). The situation in Israel is quite different from Europe or America. The mandatory military service in Israel is largely for defense. We get hit with suicide bombers on an almost weekly basis, and have been invaded by several nations in the past few decades. We're also a small country (about 1/10th the size of Italy); an invasion by several nations simultaneously (which is what happened in the 1967 war) would easily overrun the entire country if we don't have suitable defenses ready.

It's not mandatory in that you have to serve. It's mandatory in that if you choose to serve, you have to serve for the minimum that you sign up for. -- modified at 12:01 Tuesday 11th April, 2006 Nevermind! I thought he was in the US!

Isaac
