can anyone recormend a good program for indexing all of my CD's? mainly i want it to remember what i have backed up onto which disks, so that when i want to retrieve something from one of my disks i know which utilities CD or DVD i backed the files up to. i have tried 2 or 3 different programs over the years, and i am currently using wincatalog the program does everything i want, but i am feeling a bit unhappy about it using over 500meg of ram (memory usage in task manager) to index a single CD :omg:  i am working on the theory that this, combined with having only 1 gig of physical ram, plus trying to do some work in VMWare is why my machine seems just a [sarcasm] little [/sarcasm] bit unresponsive. i have emailed support to see if they will comment on this, but in the mean time i am wondering if i should look else where. the problem is it takes me ages to work out if one of these programs is really any good or not since i don't use it all the time. i did start writing my own in C#, as a way of teaching myself C#, but work and other things got in the way  zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness -- modified at 17:49 Monday 17th April, 2006

How about Spindle Search (Needs Google Desktop, but is more powerful then :)). Ed

i recall seeing that when i tried google desktop, but it seemed like an odd place to put such a program. my main concern over using that plugin was that i would not be able to backup and restore my "cd index". i think i have to replace my primary hard drive, so yet another reformat here we come. things like that tend to focus the mind on backup's :) plus i uninstalled google desktop from my work machine since it was taking up hard disk space that i needed for VMWare snapshots, and i was never actually using it. have you tried this plugin? i am wondering what you experiences of it are. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

I did try it briefly but got distracted by other things and one thing led to another. I seem to remember that my initial impression was that it was pretty good but never "had the time" to verify that. Ed

interesting. i have never heard of that before. it is actually tempting, but not really what i was looking for. now i have seen the picture i want one! :) i will hold out for a software only solution for the moment, should be a lot cheaper and i already have the cases to hold the disks :) zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

If you really want to go wild and crazy (and customize it to your personal needs), then you can download the Media starter kit on the asp.net site. It's at the very bottom on this page: http://asp.net/default.aspx?tabindex=5&tabid=41[^] Or just go to ASP.NET and click on the Resources Tab. -happy coding. :wtf:
