Google vs Microsoft

Can Google ever beat Microsoft? Ofcourse they have the best search engine that man has ever known and their Beta products are amazing, but can they ever break Microsoft's dominance on the home users' market? Can anyone see home users using Google OS (an imaginary version of OS by Google :)) instead of Windows, Google Office (same as Google OS) instead of MS Office and lastly, can you all see yourselves using Google Visual Studio? Does anyone here think that this is what the future would be like? Or will we still be using the Microsoft versions 25 years hence? Google Office
Now THIS is where I personally think that they'll win out - with GoogleCalendar, google mail and the impending (re)release of Writely, they already have the potential to create an almost complete online office suite - with the cost of MSOffice being what it is, the fact that it's free and accessible from anywhere could be the "killer feature" "Now I guess I'll sit back and watch people misinterpret what I just said......" Do you think users would shift to the Google OS and Google Office when they are comfortable with Windows and MS office?
It may end up with: ~ Windows + Intel = Wintel, ~ Google + AMD = Goolamd. :->

I think it might be possible. The fighting has already started about the Internet services and it will go on till one won this fight. And to be honest: Had anyone of you ever thought that Google might get so popular ? That they would ever launch an own Mail System or News-Bot or even Google Earth ? I suppose not ;) But I don't think they'll launch an own OS maybe something like Google Office or Google Outlook but that's all ( I hope :) ) At the end a nice link for a future vision: http://blog.outer-court.com/videos/epic-2015.html[^] I hope this link works. Otherwise use Google on Epic 2015

I don't think so. Google and Microsoft work in different IT fields. And, if we got "Google OS" - what about "old programs" compatibility ? Best regards, Alexey.
I don't care what sort of OS they make. But I know something, it will definitely be a Linux or Unix rip-off. They definitely cannot make an OS from scratch. gaurav_scr@hotmail.com

No. Has the best search engine but no the best OS & products. If they weren't able to create a good IM program (Google Talk is SHIT), neither they will be able to create a good OS/Office pack.

Google Talk is sh*t
I sincerely disagree. It is my preferred IM client because it is fast and light. The GMail integration is also brilliant. MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger is bloated with features I never use. regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you
eh, stop bugging me about it, give it a couple of days, see what happens.

User-friendly? Said-and-done? Ah! Mac OS. Yes that's true. It's the total opposite of Windows, but it won't beat it.

Windows will keep to grow and I strongly believe that nothing is going to defeat it, atleast in the near future.
I hope not, but I fear you are right. On the other side, well if MacOS would be the topseller, less admins would be needed, so Windows is good for IT jobs. ------------------------------ PROST Roleplaying Game War doesn't determine who's right. War determines who's left.

How is Mac OS the total opposite of Windows? The two companies continually blame the other for copying features. regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you

Mac OS is fast and stable, Windows isn't. Just take a look at memory used by Windows. Of course, you are right. Many features have been copied by Windows (and less features have been transferred from MacOs to Windows), but having nearly the same features in a software don't make the same usage. There are huge differents. I only work with windows, because in my job I need a windows pc, but when friends show me their Apples I'm amazed how easy and fast they are. Everone can set up a mostly secure apple computer in a few minutes. The most PCs aren't secure and you need much more time for setting them up. Well, I allowed myself to overstate. For me there's a huge difference between simplicity and stability. But of course that's just my opinion. I like MacOS but I have to work with Windows :^) ------------------------------ PROST Roleplaying Game War doesn't determine who's right. War determines who's left.

Years ago IBM was the king of the hill and no one believed that would ever change. Mainframes and PC's were both computers but considered different IT fields at the time. As time and technology changes so do the major players. Even today there are billions of lines of COBOL still in production and most are probably running on an OS other than Windows. Whether it's Google or ABC Nano/BioTech Corp (not a real company, at least I dont think it is), when a new whiz bang technology emerges the industry leader(s) will change and no one will care about compatibility with the old methods. Just like IBM even Microsoft's not immune. Thanks, Bud

Windows was created with simplicity in mind. It is unlike Mac OSes which have a Unix background & thus are more secure & stable. But windows is more customizeable. In vista the have decreased simplicity & increased security like Mac OS. But this in not going to go too well with customers I think. They are doing away with what windows is known for 'SIMPLICITY'. I must also state than Mac OS integrated all the features that people say windows Vista is copying, only after microsoft publicly announced those fetures. Is that a coincedence. No I dont think so. Its Mac who has copied windows not the other way around. Gaurav Sharma

I sure hope they fix that "Memory Usage" misnomer in Vista... Windows doesn't use nearly as much memory as Task Manager proclaims; that thing is just the working set.

that Google (not as the humble search engine provider but as the Internet Messiah) is just another Internet fad? I mean obviously their core services like search and email are here to stay, but otherwise it doesn't seem like they're getting anywhere too fast. Maybe it's because I'm Japanese and I just saw Livedoor explode with stock fraud, but I'm a bit wary of companies growing as if they've been fed elephant growth hormones -- fast but not steady. Or maybe the question should be, can Microsoft beat Google? Since Google's already dominating what they do best, it might be that they're gonna be the champion of search and possibly email, with MSN being the challenger to that. And the answer to that question, I think, is no, Microsoft can't beat Google.

I think they're perfectly capable of it. they have afterall taken a lot of core microsoft people (which I believe is where the riff starts w/ MS), they more than have the brain trust to do so. also they do have their own versions of OS's driving the search engine, and I wouldn't doubt for a minute that if they wanted to take over MS's market they could. I dont think they will though. not before vista comes out atleast.

Well, what do you think they have created a new OS for their search engine? They have just modified UNIX. Creating a new OS is totally another thing. Microsoft specializes in creating OSes & google does not. So it may be a while before, if at all trey create a new OS.
