A Program's Finishing Touch
-
Nah, it was a pretty cool fairly interactive editor. It had menus, ascii tables, and everything! It was the bees kness! :-D - Phil

I am currently finishing up a project, and I am trying to think of a good easter egg or something that would give the project it's "finishing touch." Does anyone have any good ideas on what gives a program a great finishing touch? Does anyone also have any opinions on what makes a good easter egg in a program or even if easter eggs are such a good idea? Thanks Bob X

The only easter egg I tossed in was a simple caculator, I wonder if any of the users ever found it? Not like its hidden very well.
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

Most of the Easter Eggs I have put into my programs are very subtle. A text string with my name that can only be seen by doing a binary dump...or commands that are the same as my initials are among my most common ones. Steve

No, but your ED does look good indeed. I am thinking of a real deal DOS program, I still have the exe, and it still runs great, but I haven't found any information on it. Perhaps I should start a wikipedia page on this little piece of history :D - Phil

Best thing is to make sure the buillt in help is up to date - you'd be surprised how often the help doesn't match the application! Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

I assume your ED doesn't have a GUI, nor Help|About. There was edlin back on MS-DOS. My ED started life as "ED for DOS" and was pretty popular in its day. It competed with Brief back then. Some people are even still using it today. Neville Franks, Author of Surfulater www.surfulater.com "Save what you Surf" and ED for Windows www.getsoft.com

I've put a invincible 3D pong into a program... You can play it for hours and the program never be beaten... VERY addictive... It was really nice joke, for a "serious" program (an ACO engine).. The real finishing touch is a good tenting... Lots of programs have lots of bugs due lack of testing I'm on a Fuzzy State: Between 0 an 1

I would reckon that depends on who the customer is.... Example: If you are a permanent employee of the company and a part of the "family" and it's all a cozy in-house relationship between you, the users, and the software, then it could be fun to put something in there. Example: If you are an independent consultant building software that will be in the proprietary ownership of your customer, then it's not yours to play with, and it would be rather unprofessional to put a "fun" easer egg in the application. Ultiamtely, it depends on the culture in which you are working, contractor or otherwise, as to what's appropriate. I liked the first answer to this question, the bichin-est mark you can place on an appilcation is that it works flawlessly. Validate everything in every concievable way, make sure the interface is seamless, leaveing no question from the users, and make sure everything fits and matches the audience. In other words, the best easter-egg is no gaps, no surprises, no user-work-arounds, and no confusion. Hope that helps... :o) jim out!

Can be a good idea if you have the time and your team needs a little creative boost. Good for morale, but doesn't really benefit the customer. Factoid: The MS Windows team instituted a prohibition against Easter Eggs in 1999. This came as a result of an NSA requirement for W2K receiving any kind of security clearance. I've always been curious how many were snuck in anyway.

I can think of something I believe it will be new... What about shipping your program with 3d Graphical, or even video inrtoduction just like big games? Or at least video your screen while using common aspects of your program, and ship it with audio commentary as a video tutorial? I think these things may help and yet be a new addin to programs. A new "Easter Egg".:)
