USA is giving the Azzurri a run for their money !! Match is tied 1 - 1 at half time. Good that the so-called Pundits who predicted a big Italy win were proved wrong .... With a bit of luck can USA win the match ???!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, may the team that played the best *today* win!

What a match. So full of action. The US has a good chance now of advancing from the group. They just need to beat Ghana while Italy beats the Czechs.

I gave you a 5, not because I love soccer, but because I'm sick and tired of all the World Cup fans dismissing the U.S. team's participation.

I gave you a 1 because it is not true. In fact, quite the opposite. Another issue is that the US can't be considered a top team YET.

Maybe not yet. But even though their game against the Czechs was horrible, tonight they played amazingly. Full of initiative and extremely agressive. Great match! They played with 9 playes against Italy's 10. That's quite a fight, and they managed time after time to totally rip apart the Italian defense. My only problem now is I don't know who to cheer for when US plays against Ghana.

For sure not yet. I couldn't be any other way. Too young a team.

Both are impressive achievements. Even without the result.

Well, I'm neither an American nor a Ghanesian (is that what it's called? :->), and since both teams played great today I feel for both teams. So I will probably be cheering for whoever plays best on the day .

It was. A very tantalizing game. Three players got thrown out (to from the US and one from Italy). And the US kept on pushing even when they were down on 9 players. Very agressive.

Good point! Made me chuckle :) But the point of my post was that the underdogs - US was able to hold Italy to a 1 - 1 tie. The media had been merciless in the past few days on the US team and had predicted a landslide victory for the Italians.

At the start of the World Cup Tournament the USA were ranked 5th in the world. For comparison France were 8th, Argentia 9th, England 10th, and Italy 13th. FIFA: May 2006 world ranking[^] It would seem to me that the USA is doing a lot better than many other "top" teams.

Actually I didn't think it was that great. The Ghana-Czech game was much more exciting. Also the US's only goal was an accident that went in because one the Italian players bumped the ball and made it bounce in the goal! While the US played better than their first game (which would have been difficult to NOT do - they played awfully considering the experience on the team), I still didn't think it was that great. In all fairness I didn't think the Italians played so hot either. And the ref was a major idiot, some of the red cards that were given out were ridiculous. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! I think Ghanian is the appropriate word. I've also heard Ghanaian and Ghanese but of these I'm unsure. Maybe they are in the "relating to Ghana" category.

Which goes to show the true value of the ranking. There is a soccer history that the US does not really have and that does not put it among the greats. Yet.

At least somebody actually scored a goal, unlike the majority of soccer games :sigh:

Unfortunately, it wasn't a US player. :sigh: Great game, though! BW

You don't need history - you need ability. Many of the players in the US team are, admitedly, playing in leagues in more football oriented countries, so they get exposure to a higher quality game and so they can quietly ascend the ranks without anyone really paying much attention. USA's current ranking may be a quirk of the maths, but enjoy it while you're there (and think of my team stuck way down at 59th position)

I didn't see it. I can't get into soccer. It seems that the players must have a degree in theatrical performance to be allowed to play. It's just pathetic to watch the acting that goes on. IMO, it destroys the game's credibility.
