GO USA!!!! (Soccer Alert)

Maybe not yet.
For sure not yet. I couldn't be any other way. Too young a team.
Rohde wrote:
But even though their game against the Czechs was horrible, tonight they played amazingly. Full of initiative and extremely agressive. Great match!
Indeed.
Rohde wrote:
They played with 9 playes against Italy's 10. That's quite a fight, and they managed time after time to totally rip apart the Italian defense.
Both are impressive achievements. Even without the result.
Rohde wrote:
My only problem now is I don't know who to cheer for when US plays against Ghana.
Why?

USA is giving the Azzurri a run for their money !! Match is tied 1 - 1 at half time. Good that the so-called Pundits who predicted a big Italy win were proved wrong .... With a bit of luck can USA win the match ???!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, may the team that played the best *today* win!

I gave you a 5, not because I love soccer, but because I'm sick and tired of all the World Cup fans dismissing the U.S. team's participation.

It was. A very tantalizing game. Three players got thrown out (to from the US and one from Italy). And the US kept on pushing even when they were down on 9 players. Very agressive.

I kinda wish there was more Rugby here, but I seriously doubt my mother ever would've let me play that as a kid. Jeremy Falcon

I gave you a 1 because it is not true. In fact, quite the opposite. Another issue is that the US can't be considered a top team YET.

At the start of the World Cup Tournament the USA were ranked 5th in the world. For comparison France were 8th, Argentia 9th, England 10th, and Italy 13th. FIFA: May 2006 world ranking[^] It would seem to me that the USA is doing a lot better than many other "top" teams.

At least somebody actually scored a goal, unlike the majority of soccer games :sigh:

Actually I didn't think it was that great. The Ghana-Czech game was much more exciting. Also the US's only goal was an accident that went in because one the Italian players bumped the ball and made it bounce in the goal! While the US played better than their first game (which would have been difficult to NOT do - they played awfully considering the experience on the team), I still didn't think it was that great. In all fairness I didn't think the Italians played so hot either. And the ref was a major idiot, some of the red cards that were given out were ridiculous. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Well, I'm neither an American nor a Ghanesian (is that what it's called? :->), and since both teams played great today I feel for both teams. So I will probably be cheering for whoever plays best on the day .

I think Ghanian is the appropriate word. I've also heard Ghanaian and Ghanese but of these I'm unsure. Maybe they are in the "relating to Ghana" category.

I am with you on this one. You have to respect those that put their heart into it, win or lose.

Which goes to show the true value of the ranking. There is a soccer history that the US does not really have and that does not put it among the greats. Yet.

Now, now, I appreciate the enthusiasm but "a lot better" is going too far... too early.

You don't need history - you need ability. Many of the players in the US team are, admitedly, playing in leagues in more football oriented countries, so they get exposure to a higher quality game and so they can quietly ascend the ranks without anyone really paying much attention. USA's current ranking may be a quirk of the maths, but enjoy it while you're there (and think of my team stuck way down at 59th position)

I didn't see it. I can't get into soccer. It seems that the players must have a degree in theatrical performance to be allowed to play. It's just pathetic to watch the acting that goes on. IMO, it destroys the game's credibility.

They should change the rules a bit. Having a video camera that records the game, or using the footage from televisions camera to replay suspicious or hard to judge events I think would be a good idea. It's pathetic to see a player fall and roll over eight times because the other player touched his arm. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

For sure. But fluke and inconsistent "good results" ain't enough. The history of a team matters... in soccer or in formula1.

And, hopefully, there will be a time when great foreign soccer players are brought to play in local US teams and leagues, raising the overall level of the game at home. We need support beyond a few passionate isolates.

I gotta say, I've never understood the politics behind breaking up the british players into four teams. Together you would be a force to reckon with.

While the USA was busy getting its independence, Scotland had just lost hers. It breaks the tension a bit. I'd rather be in 59th place with a small taste of independence than assimilated into a British team.

Everybody who is into soccer is pissed off by it, too. I guess what gets you into soccer is playing it as a kid. All you need is a ball and at least one friend. No installment, just a yard, and some rubbish to mark the goal (and quick feet in case you hit a window  )
