You've got to go for meccanno instead :) More fun and doesn't break apart when they hit the wall...

ahhhh, but I know they have legos.... plus if games or anything starts being thrown at walls... too reminiscent of my family, I'd be hitting the road and playing hermit again. It is one of several easy ways of getting rid of me. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. Does anybody else have those days where you lack any and all motivation to do anything productive? Or feel like you don't have any direction in which to work? If so, what helps? No matter how hard I try, I can't come up with the motivation to keep working...

Depends on how you define productive. If you define it too strictly, you will need more motivation.

Start hanging around people and/or making friends with the type of person you want to be. Pretty soon it'll start rubbing off on you. Jeremy Falcon

True, unfortunately. I look at it as a last-ditch sort of preventative measure. If they're looking to trim staff, I'm hoping they'll keep me around simply because I'm the only one who knows how all the crap jobs work .

Frequently these days. The trouble is when it starts to go into weeks of endless drudgery, tedium and boredom. I often sack the work I am supposed to be doing (I'll have another go tomorrow) and try to investigate something different that is of interest to me but still loosely related to work, just in case a manager has a "Dilbert-boss" moment and decides to come out of their glass office and "rally the troops" and feign interest as to how the staff are doing. I am quite surprised that I managed to maintian enough interest to finish this message off :) I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

I tend to do something completely different and try not to waste the day by battering my head against the task. If I am lacking code motivation I'll pick up some graphic design work or fire up Word and get some market research done. regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you
eh, stop bugging me about it, give it a couple of days, see what happens.

Getting out helps for me. Another environment and I get new ideas to work one. My parents have this chalet an hour away from where I live and it's a quiet place to be, gives you new motivation to get on with your work. WM.

Nope. I got really screwed by a large automotive manufacturer and the contract house I was working for in my last job, before I became an MVP. I was excelling at my job, coming up with better procedures, policies, standards, exception technical work, a team lead many times, technical lead, mentor, ... yada, yada, yada, ... getting fantastic reviews -- and was handed a massive paycut for my efforts, just before I closed on my first house. I was knocked back to what I was making back in 2000, and really have had a raise since. The job I'm currently in, pulled some "bait and switch" tactics to get me in here 2 years ago. They also have been loving the work I do, but the raise I got didn't even cover the rise in gas prices over the time I've been here. I can no longer afford to get to work some 60 miles away, soooo, off to Monster/CareerBuilder/Dice I go, looking for a new one. My last 5 jobs have been like this. I'm so tired of killing myself turning in fantasic work and getting the reviews for it and getting shafted in the paycheck. Oh, that paycut from the automotive manufacturer -- about 6 months after all the contractors were screwed, the executives at both companies, client and contract house, gave themselves raises that far exceeded the savings they got by cutting our paychecks. Oh! And the MVP? They don't care. It apparently has nothing to do with my job that I'm a mentor in the community. Dave Kreskowiak Microsoft MVP - Visual Basic

Have you thought about taking on your own clients ? Or you can do what I did ( find a job that's offering more money and let your boss know that it's on the table ). Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++ Metal Musings - Rex and my new metal blog

Yeah, I'm getting my resume updated on the job boards first. I'll see what's out there in the Detroit area. And at the same time, look at picking up some side jobs. Are you on any particular sites for work, or just relying on word-of-mouth.com. It's been pretty difficult to get anything done because I've been so busy with the house. I tell ya, I've had had more crap go wrong this year than my entire time in the house combined! Dave Kreskowiak Microsoft MVP - Visual Basic

Are you on any particular sites for work, or just relying on word-of-mouth.com. As soon as I get an offer that looks good, I'm planning on figuring out what it'll save me in gas, add that to what I'm making now, then call my boss and say "Hey! I've got an offer and it'll cost you $xx,xxx much just to match it! Oh! I remember you said 'I wish I could give you more, but it's not in the budget!' Guess I'll be leaving now! :)" Basically, if I get an offer within 20 miles of my house at the same money I'm making now, it'll result in a $300/month raise in my net, not gross, income. On top of that, I'm already grossly under-payed by about $10,000 a year. I've got nowhere to go but up! How cool is that? :) Dave Kreskowiak Microsoft MVP - Visual Basic
