I don't know how I did, but I now ended up with a file (on W2K3 Server) that cannot be accessed, not even the security attributes can be read. Not with an "Member of Administrators" account, not with the predefined "Administrator" account (which is normally disabled). Explorer doesn't show the "security" tab, and cacls says "access denied". All I want to do is get rid of the file - is there another way to take ownership I don't know?

take the hard disk into another system (which can read NTFS), and modify your file...

I had this happen, but it was due to my leaving anon ftp with write access running when a customer trying to send me some files simply couldn't get the idea of logging in, and I wanted to go home. The next morning I was serving up a wide variety of stuff we didn't produce... In my case, the filenames had been created with invalid characters, causing the windows functions to behave badly. Download a Knoppix LiveCD image, boot into that and delete the file.

Yes, usually the file is open when you tried to delete it, and now it's marked for deletion when the last open handle for the file is closed. I've seen this on a folder when a program has it open for change notifications. We have a service that watches for new folders being created in specific folders, and when created, creates a set of folders with specific permissions under the new folder and renames the new folder to include a project number. It's rare to need to delete a folder but sometimes multiple folders for the same project are created, or the wrong name is used, and to delete the erroneous folders I have to stop the service. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

Try to boot in safe mode and delete the file manually.

I've had some experience with this. In Windows 98, I had created a folder with no name and it would not allow me to rename it, and when I try to leave it as it is, it would tell me I had to give it a name. After holding down escape forever, it finally closed without me renaming it and I had to live with that. In Windows 2K, I had just uninstalled Morpheus and it would not allow me to delete a subfolder saying that there where still files there. It would not allow me to see what the files were or even see what the folder properties where. Booting to DOS wouldn't delete it either. So I lved with that too. At work, a colleague of mine couldn't access a file that was on an unformatted hand-me-down Windows XP laptop. After much fiddling, and almost getting to give up, I found something in his registry that had a password protection on it that the previous admin owner's account controlled and it was acting like a systems folder. Aftergiving him control over it and deleting the original owner's name, I was able to delete the folder. Don't ask me what I did since this was a while ago and in another company. :)

Use at to run a command prompt or Explorer window. That will get you a process running as LocalSystem, from which you can do anything. at 11:46am /i explorer.exe (substitute the current time+1 minute for 11:46, of course)
