Can you believe the hubris of this 14 year old girl and her mother? They are suing a private business because the girl decided to go on a date with a 19 year old man and got raped. Teen, mom sue MySpace.com for $30 million, claim popular Internet site fails to protect children from adult sexual predators.[^]

Just highlights what I consider to be THE fundemental problem with today's western cultures. Nobody feels responsible for themselves. It's not a Europe thing. It's not a US thing. It's not a liberal or conservative thing. It's not a socialist or capitalist thing. It's a philosophical cultural thing that seems to transcend borders, religions, laws, etc... Yeah, no one wants to take responsibility for thier own actions anymore. I have no doubt that she was assaulted, but she was dumb enough to get into the car of a stranger and take a ride. Was it her fault? Nope, but SOME of the blame falls on her. I would have a hard time awarding that big of a settlement to them just because of that point.

You say it's not a conservative thing, but isn't that the definition of socialism?

Uh...Yes it was. He may have committed the crime, but wouldn't you say that crawling into a lion's den covered in meat will predictably result in your own death? He deserves prison time, but her behavior deserves no reward.

According to Merriam-webster, hubris means "exaggerated pride or self-confidence" I sure don't see how it fits here... And if the private corporation's business is to facilitate meetings between people, and they fail to adequately prevent abuse of their services by sexual predators, then they are facilitating that predation, and are liable... I have little sympathy for MySpace in this...

I guess bars, nightclubs and box socials had better hire some lawyers!

Maybe the box socials (do sexual predators get invited to those, does anyone still go to those?), but most of the bars and nightclubs I have ever visited did not let 14 year olds in...;P

On purpose, anyway. Besides, sexual predators don't prey solely on underage girls. Clearly nightclubs are designed to facilitate social meetings.

No, they're designed to facilitate the sale of alcholic beverages, as are bars. Anything else is just an unintended consequence.

I guess they had better rename the "dance floor" to the "By entering, you are assuming all responsibility for any unintended consequences resulting from meeting any other person floor".

From the linked article.
Lauren Gelman, associate director of the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, said she does not think MySpace is legally responsible for what happens away from its site. "If you interact on MySpace, you are safe, but if a 13-year-old or 14-year-old goes out in person and meets someone she doesn't know, that is always an unsafe endeavor," Gelman said. "We need to teach our kids to be wary of strangers."
My emphasis. She's only partly right. We need to teach our kids to be wary of everyone. While we've taught our kids to be wary of strangers, we've neglected to tell that the man down the street is equally as dangerous. I don't have the stats, but I'd be willing to bet you'll find that child abduction by complete strangers is further down the list than by someone the child is familiar with. Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] When no one was looking, every single American woman between the ages of 18 and 32 went out and got a tatoo just above their rumpus. [link[^]]

I'm pretty sure it's the definition. Socialism is the dispersal of one's personal responsibility across the state.
