Yeah, no one wants to take responsibility for thier own actions anymore. I have no doubt that she was assaulted, but she was dumb enough to get into the car of a stranger and take a ride. Was it her fault? Nope, but SOME of the blame falls on her. I would have a hard time awarding that big of a settlement to them just because of that point.

Maybe the box socials (do sexual predators get invited to those, does anyone still go to those?), but most of the bars and nightclubs I have ever visited did not let 14 year olds in...;P

On purpose, anyway. Besides, sexual predators don't prey solely on underage girls. Clearly nightclubs are designed to facilitate social meetings.

No, they're designed to facilitate the sale of alcholic beverages, as are bars. Anything else is just an unintended consequence.

I guess they had better rename the "dance floor" to the "By entering, you are assuming all responsibility for any unintended consequences resulting from meeting any other person floor".

                    From the linked article.

Lauren Gelman, associate director of the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, said she does not think MySpace is legally responsible for what happens away from its site. "If you interact on MySpace, you are safe, but if a 13-year-old or 14-year-old goes out in person and meets someone she doesn't know, that is always an unsafe endeavor," Gelman said. "We need to teach our kids to be wary of strangers."

My emphasis. She's only partly right. We need to teach our kids to be wary of everyone. While we've taught our kids to be wary of strangers, we've neglected to tell that the man down the street is equally as dangerous. I don't have the stats, but I'd be willing to bet you'll find that child abduction by complete strangers is further down the list than by someone the child is familiar with. I'm pretty sure it's the definition. Socialism is the dispersal of one's personal responsibility across the state.

Man's mind, states John Galt, the protagonist of Atlas Shrugged, is his basic tool of survival. Life is given to him, survival is not. His body is given to him, its sustenance is not. His mind is given to him, its content is not. To remain alive, he must act, and before he can act he must know the nature and purpose of his action.[^] Mike "We ain't stuck on stupid." badass Lt. Ah yes that lovely philosophical story about the fictional 1337 h4x0rs. I still remember my most vivid observation was wondering, if it could occur, how many people would actually be in the group to create the event, versus, how many people would "think" they were in the group. I guess if that first caveman had not invented fire none of us would exist today. :)

Serious quetion: how many 14 year olds in the US have driving licenses or credit cards?

Doesn't lying constitute breaking their terms or service, and void any moral or legal claim you would have as a result of that lying? (although the girl was 14 in this case - I'm just asking.)

Cha-Ching! Reminds me of the mother who encouraged her teenage daughters (12-14) to get pregnant and have a baby so they could claim benefits. Some people should not be licensed to breed.

I guess they had better rename the "dance floor" to the "By entering, you are assuming all responsibility for any unintended consequences resulting from meeting any other person floor".

I prefer the approach taken by a "chainsaw disco" I once visited in Alabama: the sign above the dance floor read "No Guns on dance floor". Appearently guns were ok anywhere else in the establishment...

Uh...Yes it was. He may have committed the crime, but wouldn't you say that crawling into a lion's den covered in meat will predictably result in your own death? He deserves prison time, but her behavior deserves no reward.

Uh, no it's not. HE could have been a NICE guy but instead he was an idiot who sexually assaulted the girl. I am not saying that she did not carry SOME of the blame, but IT WAS HIS FAULT. Sure, she should not have been dumb enough to act go with him in the first place but that by no means makes it her fault.
