I'm trying to find a single word to use in a list of ideal personal attributes that reflects the concept that "the strong should protect the weak" but I'm coming up short. A thesaurus is designed to map single words, and has been of little use in mapping this concept to a personal attribute. Anyone care to take a swing at this? [edit] David was close with "guardian", and I thought I'd put my response to that here so you'd have a better idea of what I'm trying to accompish. I'm looking for a word that would fit into a list of attributes describing a person, e.g. Tolerant Considerate Benevolent Fair and so on, so guardian doesn't quite fit, i.e. you might say that "someone is considerate" or "someone is fair" but you wouldn't say "someone is guardian". Well Good Samaritan, roots from Greek / Latin in describing Ancient Samarians (I believe). So it would loose the English definition if you dropped the “Good” portion. have you looked at “patronus” it is a Latin word meaning patronus -i m. [a protector , defender, patron]; esp. [an advocate in a court of law]. Or contego : to cover, shield, protect, defend. Here is a decent list of Latin based words - Latin Word List[^] If you’re willing to compromise a little on the strict definition of the phrase, then consider Sentinel[^] If you ever find a definition to word generator, aka a reverse dictionary please let me know. I spend far too much time searching for the correct word instead of a semi meaningless phrase.

How about just Samaritan? I would also suggest Champion.

Looses it's common English meaning then, as Samaria was a place. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Samaritan[^] 1. A native or inhabitant of Samaria. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Samaria[^]
