I'm trying to find a single word to use in a list of ideal personal attributes that reflects the concept that "the strong should protect the weak" but I'm coming up short. A thesaurus is designed to map single words, and has been of little use in mapping this concept to a personal attribute. Anyone care to take a swing at this? [edit] David was close with "guardian", and I thought I'd put my response to that here so you'd have a better idea of what I'm trying to accompish. I'm looking for a word that would fit into a list of attributes describing a person, e.g. Tolerant Considerate Benevolent Fair and so on, so guardian doesn't quite fit, i.e. you might say that "someone is considerate" or "someone is fair" but you wouldn't say "someone is guardian". Well Good Samaritan, roots from Greek / Latin in describing Ancient Samarians (I believe). So it would loose the English definition if you dropped the “Good” portion. have you looked at “patronus” it is a Latin word meaning patronus -i m. [a protector , defender, patron]; esp. [an advocate in a court of law]. Or contego : to cover, shield, protect, defend. Here is a decent list of Latin based words - Latin Word List[^] If you’re willing to compromise a little on the strict definition of the phrase, then consider Sentinel[^] If you ever find a definition to word generator, aka a reverse dictionary please let me know. I spend far too much time searching for the correct word instead of a semi meaningless phrase.

There is no single word adjective that reflects this quality in a person simply because this particular word construction doesn't lend itself to be a singular attribute for a person. The words you used ("the strong should protect the weak") for the concept you seek is more of a moral judgement or a knightly assignment than an attribute. "shielding", "sheltering", "insulating", "champion" etc, all of those describe protecting the weak (in some manner, not necessarily bodily strength) to some degree but can be used to protect the weak evil as well as the weak good and I think you're searching for an altruistic word for the concept. I believe you'll be hard pressed to find a single word that embodies the concept of "the strong protecting the weak" as an attribute for a living breathing person. Mike Poz

Okay so this is proof positive I have no life, I was pondering what protecting the weak really means, after some thought, there is only one word that really embodies protecting the weak. Leadership, protecting people isn’t just a matter of protecting them from violent situations, but also helping and listening. My finally vote would be for Leadership, as it takes more than brawn to protect someone from the harsh realities of the world.

I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

Paladin. Nothing is impossible, we just don't know the way of it yet.
