      When it gets rough in the air, think that within that same half hour more people will die stupid accidental deaths on the ground than passenger on your plane. Nothing is ever 100% sure, but at that moment you're in a statically very safe position. You have a highly trained professional pilot and ground support that analyzed the weather and decided your route was safe for your aircraft. When you get to the airport, look at the arriving screens. Remember all those planes that made safely through the same disturbances. Multiply that by a thousand airports. That`s just in the half hour between your landing and your exit. Remember that number of safe passengers the next time you fly instead of the 6 months old news clip. And remember that evrery year, there are likely to be more lotery millionaires than airplane crash casualties. -- modified at 22:50 Tuesday 4th July, 2006

        You need a better reference.... stand at ground zero for a rogue missile returning (or even not sure if you are because you didn't pay attention to which camera is which on the video monitor), or have a near fatal event elsewhere. You realize that your life is put on the line every day, you just don't realize it. Flying is as safe as any other mode of travel, probably a lot safer than just showing up for work for me.... :~ Worrying serves no practical purpose. Recognition does. Recognizing threats and taking precautions is a whole other issue. You are in control of your own vehicle, so you maintain it, give yourself through your own power a better chance to come out alive, but you are powerless in respect to other vehicles on the road. If you wanted to be absolutely safe, there is nothing you can do. Even walking around your own house is a risk. You don't worry about these risks because somethings are out of your control, you trust in the odds, do your best when the choice is in your hands, and go on with life. Flying is no different. There is very little you can do about the chance of flight problems, but the worst case chance is slimmer than walking in any town in New Mexico and being hit, or hopping in your car in any state in the USA and being in a major crash. Being afraid of flight is just wasted energy.... now Coulrophobia, that makes much more sense... :omg: _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Strangely I'm not afraid of flying. Or heights. I used to have a really big fear of fire due to an incident when I was a child. I finally got over that. I am still afraid of spiders though. I think you just have to face your fears to get over them. But I truly think that flying is safer than dealing with drivers from Nebraska where the motto is "the stop light is only a recommendation."

                            No I love it. Would it not be for my right eye, I would have been a pilot (Indeed, I managed 8th place at the admission of the french army, but they detected the problem at the eye ). Flying is great, I love it, I find turbulences GREAT (I love when the plane shakes, and the people that are letting footprints in their seats make me laugh (I find it funny, I do not make fun of them, though, do not get me wrong). [Do not read that if you are afraid of plane].What I am still afraid of is landing on a wet track, when the plane sometimes just slip on the water for a few milliseconds. This is the most critical part of the landing, if something happens at this time nobody can do anything (nor pilot neither board computer).[end] My advice : go and try flying by yourself. Most of people fear of flight comes from the fact that: - they do not have the knowledge for piloting the plane themselves, so if something happens to the pilot, nobody can take control - you cannot just stop in the air if smoke comes out of somewhere. For the second part, you'll just have to live with it. For the first part, once you'll see how easy it is to fly a plane (at least the small ones - took me 8 hours practice back when I was 17 to be able to fly alone), you'll change your mind about this "huge machine full of electronics that only extraordinary human beings are able to handle.". Myth of the pilot is a myth, driving a bus in the center of Rome is much more difficult than flying a Paris-New York 747. ~RaGE();

                              Well, don't fear it. You don't have to worry, they all come down. And if a plane drops you have a good chance that no other one will survive you. Dont worry. The plane can take a hell of a lot more g-force than that. Planes are strong, well designed, and provided they are well maintained, very, very safe. Just strap in and enjoy the ride! Nunc est bibendum
