MS Office .NET???

I stumbled across this article yesterday that has screenshots from a presentation about Office NGO (Next Generation Office). Some pretty neat looking stuff I think. I guess now we can stop trying to imitate the XP look and start working on the NGO look. DOH Forget to include the link!!! Here it is, DOH! Note that the slides are not verified to be legit, but Paul did update it with this information: "UPDATE Jim Adams over at Vibrant Logic tells me that they had links up for the original Shockwave animation but Microsoft requested that they remove the "unauthorized release of an MS concept piece," indicating that the Office NGO work shown here is indeed real." If they are fakes then somebody has put a lot of thought and effort into it. It certainly has the feel of where Microsoft planned to take their apps and some of their userability ideas. It has a MS Money feel to it, with a bit of the Dashboard/Outlook Web Access technologies as well as a bit of the MSN look. Very nice if it is a fake, but if they are real then I think we are in for some interesting times. Michael :-)

Looks interesting, but looks can be deceiving

oooooooooo I'm a sucker for new/pretty UI's :-P James Sonork: Hasaki "I left there in the morning with their God tucked underneath my arm their half-assed smiles and the book of rules. So I asked this God a question and by way of firm reply, He said - I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays." "Wind Up" from Aqualung, Jethro Tull 1971

This thing about Office apps being web-browser based (the presentation did not show Excel or Word, only Outlook) is not new. Several years ago someone recommended me to buy Office 97 because it was going to be the last standalone version, and that subsequent versions would run on a browser. I think his prediction finally is coming true (after two more versiones). The concept sounds interesting, but I think it has some drawbacks. First, there is no way you can make an interface on a web page to be as intuitive as it can be done with a normal Windows app. And remember that Office apps have many many features. Ok, they are Microsoft and if something does not exist, they invent it. But still, it will be a little disconcerting to non-expert users. The idea of MyOffice looks good, just let's see how they go about security, and how many people really trust their documents to them.
