Someone said, it is impossible to be a good developer until he smokes. Are you a good developer? My fellow developers with me are used to smoke, however, I never saw anyone who is good in development and avoid smoking. Sameers (theAngrycodeR) Need custom software? how can you be a great developer if you spend half of your time smoking???...here, smoking in the office is not allowed, so while you are smoking, you can't be developing code (unless you take a laptop outside)...smoking requires at least one hand, so you would need to be a real good one handed typist...or risk getting ashes in the keyboard...and when you should be developing code, your thinking about how many more minutes to the next break so you can light up again :doh: Steve
Is it necessary to let one hand always busy while you are smoking? In this third world, there are many things invented for example "ash tray" where you can place your cigerate after having some smoke and continue working. I do that always and I know, I work faster than any other (atleast certified by my clients :->). I usually smoke a packet in a day (and in all day, I spend about 10 hours sleeping. enough time or I should increase it:zzz:) which includes not more than 8-10 hours of work. Apart from the jokes and other non serious words, I believe that developers must be allowed to smoke on their seats. I bet you, it will increase their ability to programme. I am a good developer btw! I heard so from many peoples locally, so I just thought to know globally. If you dont like smoking, thats a good sign. But it doesn't mean smokers live in "mud hut" and "steal electricity and internet connection from neighbours". BTW, smoking is worst or drinking? though both are bad, which one is more? ditto - all the ones I knew (don't think anyone on the current gig smokes) spent most of their time outside smoking. Some even considered that smoking was actually part of the role and thus did 10-20% less per day then the rest.
I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it. - pTerry

I agree with you Chris. I have never seen any developer smoking... but when I am in the zone, the keyboard can get quite hot.... but smoking? Not yet. The closest I get to smoking is when management comes up with yet another "functional spec"....:) Why is common sense not common? Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level where they are an expert.

Maybe it is just a movement to reduce the number of developers.. Sure smoke all your want ;) Actually, I just think someone got mixed up on the quote and probably had nothing to do with "smoking" originally. Oh, whoops. My mistake. Sorry Sarge! And you alluded to your parents smoking, so I was just inidcating my folks did (or used to, as of 5 weeks ago). And nah, my mum has never been much of a kayaker, so it can't be all that similar. Hmm, kayaking, that is something I haven't done in a while. I guess my wife has had an extreme effet on me. I never used to mind smoking that much, since I was around it all the time, but now that passive smoking has pretty bad physical sideeffects on my wife, I take it a little personally. - Phil

No...I was at first referring to my folks not getting me immunized against the communicable viral infection of Cigarette Smoking....I kinda wish they had. My father smoked when I was a child, but just up and cold-turkey quit one day when it pissed him off. I wish I knew how he did that. I picked up smoking 20 years ago with no influence or help from pops; it was all peer pressure and the appearance of being "cool" that got me started. For the past ten years or more, quitting is something I've wanted to do and tried to do. Despite some huge personal hurdles overcome in my life, quitting smoking has proved the most difficult thing I've ever faced. Odd when contrasted against some massive lessons of personal capability and strength of character in a number of life-and-death situations, that something as seemingly-petty as cigarettes would be my most daunting challenge..... Oh well...onwards and upwards, I continue my life's stuggle.... Jim
