Windows backup :(
-
Hi All, In our team, we have windows XP and Win2K machines and using Windows Backup as the tool for our daily backup. After scheduling the job, it will work fine for somedays... but after that it wont take any backup. I have reconfigured it 2-3 times after getting NC(Nonconfirmity) from Process Consultant :( What could've happened? This is not happening only for me, but for others as well. Could you pls suggest some better, free tools to take backup properly? SaRath.

I don't know what's going wrong for you, because we're using NTBackup successfully to back up from two different Windows servers (one running Windows 2000, the other Windows Server 2003) over the network to one of our workstations. It's been running successfully for more than a year; the only failures occur when there's been a power outage. We did find that mapped drive letters required that the user that mapped the drive letter was actually logged in when the task runs. If you want to back up to a location on the network, use a UNC path (\\machinename\share) and ensure that the scheduled job runs using a user account that has write access to the share. I also recall that NTBackup cannot tolerate a network error when trying to write to the destination file. We did have another server at a different site trying to back up to the same machine here over our VPN, but it was just too unreliable. We now use NTBackup to back up that machine to its local hard disk, and a separate scheduled task which uses the BITS engine to copy the backup file over the VPN, hence it's resumable if a failure occurs. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

What will happen on network errors? will it remove the scheduled job? SaRath.

No, it just stops backing up at that point. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

No offense but if you are relying on Free tools to backup work then you are indicating that the value of your work is worthless.
What's the problem with Free Tools. I think there are some good projects at sourceforge.net SaRath.

SyncBackLE does a good job in my experience: http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html[^] Although now I use their full version which has a couple of cool features like being able to back up open files using shadowcopy (e.g. if you have outlook open).
