What a fantastic country. Whether the chain mail/closing of the child protection unit is a hoax or not doesn't negate the fact that this is the kind of thing that does happen in south africa. It doesn't even make headline news anymore. In a recent address to parliament, part of the south african safety and security minister's speech included "They should stop whinging and moaning about crime. If they don't like it, they can leave." Nice fella. What about the people who don't want to leave? For most people in south africa it's no longer a question of IF they'll get murdered, raped, robbed, hijacked, etc., it's more like WHEN. I say, "F**k you Charles Ngukula, if that's your attitude then I'm gone." I leave south africa in 318 days from today. And then the government wonders why there's a "brain drain".:mad::mad: Sorry about the rant. It just ticks me off.

MOST people? Don't be a Chicken Little. It isn't that bad by a long stretch. I agree there are problems and we need to work on them but it is a good place to live for many people. BTW, where are you moving to? (and before you accuse me of X Y or Z I didn't leave South Africa because of the crime or its future but because I want to see a bit more of the world. I'll return to SA one day.) regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you

Last week a 3 year old girl (in South Africa) was beaten and raped. She is still alive. The man responsible was released on bail yesterday. He is walking the streets. If you are too busy to read this then just sign your name and forward this on. The Government is planning to close the child protection unit and this is a petition against it. This is a very important petition. It is an essential part of the justice system for children. You may have already heard that there's a myth in South Africa that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. The younger the virgin, the more potent the cure. This has led to an epidemic of rapes by infected males, with the correspondent infection of innocent kids. Many have died in these cruel rapes. Recently in Cape Town, a 9-month-old baby was raped by 6 men. Please think about that for a moment. The child abuse situation is now reaching catastrophic proportions and if we don't do something, then who will? Kindly add your name to the bottom of the list and please pass this on to as many people as you know. If you are signature no.: 120 - please forward the mail-list to childprotectpca@saps.org.za Please don't be complacent, do something about the kids of South Africa. You can make a difference. That child is fighting for life. This is just one of the million cases of child abuse, so please pledge your support and help keep CPU (CHILD PROTECTION UNIT) open. Please give your support to the petition and ensure that it goes to as many people as possible. Please don't just leave it, make a difference. In order to write your name copy this message and paste it in a new mail (compose). Or click on forward and add your name to the list and send it on to others. Again, if you are number 120 please send this to childprotectpca@saps.org.za I got this in a chain mail. But the sender is a sane guy, so I guess it cannot be a fake one.

Yeah, sadly the rapes are true. I'd bin the chain mail though. No online petition is going to attract the attention of the South African government. regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you

This is certainly a rediculous myth that people from other part of the world don't have.:sigh: , and also the action taken against the criminal is not stringent it seems in RSA.. that's worrying too. Even in India the punishment is severe enough to deter a criminal from doing it again. I meant this Paul.

In all fairness, that poll doesn't only include crime, but disease, drought, famine, child labour etc as well.

Well VuNic you are even more unaware than I thought. The "sex with virgin cures X" myth has been around for centuries. It is present in many, many cultures. Africa does have a bigger problem with it though than other areas I admit. As for AIDS specifically the virgin myth is an African problem not just South African. You'll find it in Cairo and Cape Town and all the tribes and towns inbetween. I'll happily bet that this myth occurs in Asia and South America too. regards, Paul Watson Ireland FeedHenry needs you

The kinda myth here I've heard about is like... "If you take tiger's milk...", "If you keep a jackles (horn!) yup they take a piece from it's skull and call it a horn!.. but the virgin myth is something new I hear. But this happens in Isalmic beliefs.. But it has never been equated to a " = cures AIDS". :wtf: what a wicked way to spread it!!

For most people in south africa it's no longer a question of IF they'll get murdered, raped, robbed, hijacked, etc., it's more like WHEN.

MOST people? Don't be a Chicken Little. It isn't that bad by a long stretch. I agree there are problems and we need to work on them but it is a good place to live for many people. BTW, where are you moving to? Wasn't there a minister there supporting AIDS prevention (he was president of a prevention campaign supporting the use of condoms and sex ed) aquited of raping a seropositive woman? In the court he stated he believed he was immune to HIV because he took a shower afterwards? or something...

Not only that, when asked why he had unprotected sex with a woman he know was HIV+ he replied something along the lines of But it was protected, my bodyguards were all over the property. Vice-President aka dumb*ss.

Dublin. Not sure exactly which part of Dublin as yet as it's too soon for me to look for gainful employment but I'm thinking Portmarnock looks nice. :) Just as long as it doesn't take me over an hour to get to work I'm happy. And safe. And a good few thousand miles from ol' Charlie N.
