If you like Made in Japan, you should really own Made in Europe, which is from the Burn tour (David Coverdale and Glen Hughes). It's harder to find (considered an import in the US), but it's an intense performance. And although it's considered blues rather than rock, Stevie Ray Vaughn's Live Alive is inspired.

I think I heard it once. Not as good as Made in Japan, where Purple had their definitive lineup IMO.

Those are all good, but the *best* is Iron Maiden - Live after death.

Led Zep are my favourite rock band. However, in terms of live albums, I prefer the rawer heavy metal ones. Rush are also my favourite rock band but, again the artists listed earlier have done better live albums.

Unleashed in the East and Made In Japan are pretty awesome. I think the difference for me is, Live after death came out while I was a metal fan, I went back and discovered those others. Plus, the album art is incredible. :-)

No sleep til hammersmith !!! As Live after death has the famous 'scream for me hammersmith', I guess Hammersmith is the common thread for great live albums.

Well, although Motorhead were at their peak in my formative years, I've never actually heard this album, although I did see Motorhead live during that period - at Hammersmith in fact!

Virtually the other way round for me! I heard Live after Death for the first time only about two years ago. I was impressed. :) I did buy the first few Maiden albums as they came out - up to Powerslave. Then I faded away but I've been listening to them quite a bit recently - including Live after Death.

I would actually go with How the West Was Won over The Song Remains The Same. The companion DVD for it is outstanding also. (It's just called Led Zeppelin DVD and does a better job of capturing their live performance than Song Remains the Same did.)
