I hate bugs, now if you thought of the software kind first, slap yourself in the face 'cos your a nerd. I amn't talking about that kind, I am talking about the multi-legged kind. Now I bless the Lord God himself because I live in Ireland, and we only have very small bugs, and worst you could get is a wasp sting. But I am aware that the Cpians live in all manner of foreign lands, with all manner of giant, hairy bugs, stingy, bitey, crawley, yuchey bugs! How do you do it ? Its like there alien, they don't belong on this planet. So tell me about your bugs and their goings on ? Regards Ray "Je Suis Mort De Rire"

Down here in the western Cape of South Africa, we seem to be having an invasion of crickets. Damned annoying when they're in the roof and you're trying to sleep. Their numbers peaked a couple of weeks ago, now we seem to be getting more than the usual numbers of centipedes. Did we in some way offend a small god, and he/she/it is now punishing us with plagues ? :-D Bruce Duncan CP#9088, CPUA 0xA1EE, Sonork 100.10030

Lightning bugs are cool, but I don't recall ever seeing one in person. One interesting thing about them is that the method they use to light up is ~95% efficient (keeping the bug from burning up, but staying a little warmer with only ~5% of the energy being heat). Too bad our light bulbs are closer to the opposite. John

Hmmm.. We have scorpions, especially a black variety that grows to about 9" in length. And Black Widow spiders, of course. Along with their miniscule, but far deadlier cousins, the Brown Recluse spiders. There's a cockroach the size of a rat, which the locals like to call a waterbug. And there are vinegaroons - technically a sun spider, which is aggressive enough to actually attack humans on purpose. On top of the bugs, we also have a nice selection of venomous snakes - the coon-tail, the diamondback, and the most toxic of all rattlesnake sub-species, the Mohave Green. There's also a venomous lizard called the Gila Monster, just for variety.

Mosquitos! I can't think of anything good about them... Well, maybe I can. They make me like bats and spiders, which eat mosquitos. :) During a visit to Pennsylvania, I learned about June Bugs. (I don't know what their "real" name might be.) They're about the size of the end of your thumb (past the last knuckle), have a rather hard shell, and are either very stupid or have no navigational skills. Sitting on an outside porch, you hear them banging into whatever hard objects might have been innocently sitting in the middle of nowhere. You also have to watch out, because it doesn't feel good when they ram into you. John

here in Florida we have all manner of nasties: -spiders -brown recluse - not as big as Aussie spiders, but mega-poisonous. you don't meet many survivors of a brown recluse bite -insects -fire ants - big, red, mean and nasty. about 1cm long. when i was a teenager - got several bites on my leg that got infected, almost lost my leg. -cockroaches - if you see small ones, the eggs have just hatched and you will be seeing LOTS more of them, big ones can be up to 4inches(10cm?), ugly freaky, immune to bug spray and knives,, i stabbed one with a fork and it was 3 years before i killed that bastard (4 little holes on his carapace) -palmetto bugs - flying cockroaches, scary as shit, sound like a soft machine gun, all the bad stuff of cockroaches, but airborne -fleas - if you have pets, you have fleas, i hate them the worst -snakes -american rattler - besides the american west, florida is home to the rattler, they crawl under sleeping bags and tents, be careful when camping -water mocassin - deadlier than the rattler, all black with red strikes on his head, they swim fast and can jump out of water when scared, make lots of noise -John

Aha ! My tropical country is the bug´s paradise ! We have a lot of them here. I think the most famous one (at least now) is the Aedes Egypti, it´s a mosquito. It transmit a virus... called Dengue, there a lots of them in some states (mine doesn´t have much). Also there are a lot of fancy bugs at the Amazon Rain Forest... those are kewl (I just saw them on TV). Mauricio Ritter - Brazil Sonorking now: 100.13560 Trank

Gee, I forgot all about the fire ants - we've got them in Arizona, too. Fortunately Ace hardware has a product that actually does control them. And we now have Killer bees! Despite predictions that they'd never move this far north, we've got bunches of them now, all in the past three years.

The brown recluse is hardly ever fatal. Usually you just end up with a nasty nasty wound that takes forever to heal and usually leaves a scar. The venom mostly just destroys cells and makes you sick. Most of the skin damage actually comes from the body's natual systems cutting off blood flow to the bite area thus resulting in a large patch of dead skin. here in Florida we have all manner of nasties: -spiders -brown recluse - not as big as Aussie spiders, but mega-poisonous. you don't meet many survivors of a brown recluse bite -insects -fire ants - big, red, mean and nasty. about 1cm long. when i was a teenager - got several bites on my leg that got infected, almost lost my leg.

John

They lite up for about a second at a time and they do it over and over again. It's neat when you get a whole bunch in your backyard at night (after all the lite is meant to attract others) and they all do their thing. Jeremy L. Falcon "The One Who Said, 'The One Who Said...'" First of all it doesn't seem logical that all the deadliest animals in the world roam Australia. :suss: Secondly, as far as I know the deadliest spider is The Black Widow (or the White Widow? I keep getting them mixed). And thirdly, I can understand why snakes were put on the list but what does the Koala has to do with it!? Isaac Sasson, Lean, mean posting machine! Well, it really depends on what is ment by deadly. For example, the venom of a black widow is 15 times stronger than the prairie rattlesnake. However, due to the small amounts of venom injected by a black widow, it is rarely fatal. The prairie rattlesnake injects a lot of venom and has a 15-25% mortality rate. Now I don't have any information comparing the funnel web to the black widow, but there are some very interesting characteristics. When looking at the Sydney funnel web spider, the male is 5 times more potent than the female. Also, the male tends to roam a lot making it much more likely that he will end up indoors. He is also generally considered an agressive spider. Death from a Sydney funnel web is very uncommon. The site I looked at said there weren't any known cases of death caused by the female Sydney funnel web spider. Also, both sexes of the mountain funnel web spider may be more potent than the Sydney funnel web. Oh the crap I find on the internet... "Your skill at locating useless information has improved!"
