Anyone ever fly Air New Zealand ?
-
I'm planning my next trip ( the earlier the better, fare wise ), and I can get a killer fare ( Melb -> LAX -> Melb for AU$1500 ) with air new zealand. But, after finding out that United's fleet is 30 years old, I was wondering if anyone had flown them internationally. Would I spend the flight hoping if I paid someone the $400 that I saved, they would move me into the area fit for human habitation ? Oh, I hope to catch a couple of concerts, but I'm mostly excited about getting back together with the team, seeing everyone again, group hugs, etc.

I haven't heard of them crashing any planes recently, so that's good.

My what short memories we have ;P It's only what 5 years since Air New Zealand bought Ansett, ran it into the ground with poor maintenance, resulting in the grounding of their ?entire? 737 fleet Air New Zealand was technically bankrupt and IIRC Qantas was looking at buying them for $1.00 (plus assumed debt) I don't think the ACCC (or the NZ equivalent) where too keen on the idea. I forget who bailed them out was it Singapore Airlines or the NZ Govt in the end ~ But hey their long haul fleet is probably ok... They claim their 747's are only 12 years old http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/aboutus/fleet/default.htm

Ah, yes. Some Kiwis I know tell the story differently, but I remember.

I think that Ansett was already going down and that it may not have been the smartest buy. Its true that the NZ Govt (and Singapore???) bailed them out - and made ALOT of $$$ by doing so. They're supposed to be good, but I've always avoided them as they were much more expensive. I found it cheaper flying Emirates & Korean Air to NZ (from Germany/England) The NZ Govt didn't want Air NZ sold to Quantas, because Quantas was one of the few competitors in the (NZ) market.

Er, hope you've not bought your ticket yet, Christian... Air NZ suck for long haul flights--in my opinion. I have found the air stewards to be grumpy and surly (and, jeez, their new uniforms are ugly...) and there is no individual seat-back TVs, so you've got to crane your neck to watch some dull as dishwater made for TV movie on the one overhead CRT that the guy in front of you is blocking with his newspaper... Grr!! I always try to avoid Air NZ when flying long haul, and go with Singapore Airlines. That'd be my recommendation. Hope that helps, Jon
