Sorry - I just saw the photo, and then the title of the book. I didn't bother reading the text as I thought that wasn't what Chris L was pointing us to. Looked to me that Chris L was just pointing out the humor - and not really focusing on the serious content.

Perhaps it is that, but I just saw the humor - the political agenda was too well hidden for me I guess. Oh well - gotta read more newspapers I suppose.

the cool kids call that "dog whistle politics". people who are sensitive (because they've trained themselves to be) to the code-words, subtle framings of issues, and hot topics of the day will pick up on it right away. normal people won't even notice.

Umm...perhaps I'm missing the overall point here, but isn't what the military does supposed to be by nature...um..secretive or something. I can't believe they post that stuff on their website..hmmm...unless it's a diversionary tactic to make us all stop thinking about area 51...hmmm....:~

oh? so you googled airborn laser? THEL? Aerial cable is a giant piece of rope that you dangle things off of. I helped build the facility, but all it is is a way of getting inexpensive projects... err... off the ground so to speak. Those are not the things you want to keep secret. You never keep the inexpensive things secret, only the multi-billion in failures. Or you use the publicity to announce the failures as successes so you always put your best foot forward. :) What stuff on there should be classified? Everything there is outdated information. -- modified at 13:54 Thursday 17th August, 2006

Hell if I know, I'm Canadian, I don't think anything should be classified. :) It just seems odd that the US military or any part of it would have a web site at all for anything other than recruiting.

and what I saw on our tour of carlsbad was a column shaped like a guy relieving himself on a wall, and another part of the female anatomy that I just didn't think was appropriate to photograph... :) I guess it all just proves someone has more of a sense of humor than even us.

Everything is recruiting to the military. If you are not recruiting people, you are recruiting support/votes or at least acceptance. http://www.army-technology.com/projects/thaad/[^] is one of the greatest failures of military funding, but if it is marketed as a success, it is a success. It hits less often than the missile defense system it replaces, but it costs more, so if you make everyone think it is a success everyone is happy. That is why you need websites. Without the websites and news programs talking about the success of THAAD and the hope of the future of defending the country using it -- they would have to use their historical record which was 1 in 13. Why would anyone want to rely on the truth when you can build a website? :) edit: now we are getting soap-boxy. My turn to be quiet. :) -- modified at 14:04 Thursday 17th August, 2006

I saw the potential right away to be offended, I just didn't care and I can laugh at myself and I admire people who can make great humor like this. I wish I had the gift. Adults can tolerate their religion being mocked. Children cannot.

My point wasn't about religion being mocked. My point was that I believe the post belonged in the soapbox and I still do. You can mock me and my beliefs in the end the price of mockery will be ultimately decided and I'm not going to comment on the price or the payee. I really don't care if you do but do it in the soapbox where it belongs. I might even come play once a year. It was not the pasta monster that bothered me it was the letter and the comments on the rest of the page (did you scroll down) that made me think it was soapy. But! Krism42, I do value the point you are making and think there is wisdom to be had there-in. I will remember it the next time my religion is mocked but I will still stand up to a post that should be soaped.:rose:

Yeah it wasn't the "making fun of part that bothered me" as a Christian I certainly appreciate the humor aimed at my beliefs. I have to or I'm ignorant. I just felt it belonged in the soapbox and my counter was that if it had made fun of muslims then it would have been moved post-haste. My religion is my own and I normally will not speak of it here sometimes though I decide to kick at the goad and say something. I'm no evangelist and have no desire to ever be one. But if we are going to through the word "respect" around then I believe it should be mutually applied to all parties. I have a right to express my opinion that something belongs in the soapbox, others have the right to challenge that and I have the right to defend it. When it degrades to insults and comments that have the intent to belittle it exposes the insulters and the belittlers as the children they are.:rose: - Rex
