I bought a kewl new USB TV tuner (ADS) which has lasted a record 30 days (and 3 uses) before dying on me. I'm not sure it it was neglect or the barrage of lightning strikes around here, but another suspicion is that my laptop quitely murdered it late one night. Yes, my laptop is that evil. Anyway, I need a new TV tuner. I'd like it to work with my future laptop (not making that mistake again) and a desktop, so a PCMCIA card won't do. An FM tuner would be nice too, as would software to allow me to record and timeshift programs. Any recommendations?

    cheers, Chris Maunder

Does the device not have a warranty that you can claim on ? Or was it 30 days ? ADS is the brand of my USB video capture device, they have quite a range, and seem to be good quality to me. Pinnacle were always the king of that heap, IIRC, do they do anything USB ?

You can get PCMCIA -> PCI adapters, like this[^] for example.

Ooh - I can even now picture the fun I'll have crawling under my desk hunting for the back of my PC, evicting the inhabitants that have made their home in the warm, dust filled space amongst the cables, and inserting a PCMCIA card with a cable attached to it into the adapter. ;)

Well, not for the laptop, never have liked the USB versions (for recording at least.) In my desktop I switched last spring from a ATI-7500 All-In-Wonder to a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-350 and have been happy with it. Hauppauge does have a USB product also, but I can say nothing about it.

I have two of the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2[^] models that work very well. Tried the ATI USB one and returned it. Bundled software was very bad. The Hauppauge software is not great but good enough for just watching on the desktop and simple recording / scheduling. Has FM tuner and a remote control. My daughter uses SageTV to run hers.

Are you talking ATSC or DVB-T ??? For ATSC you only have a few choices like the VBox USB 3560. For DVB-T the choices widen considerably. The TwinHan Beetle (also OEM'd as the MSI DigiVox) is a fabulous and very small unit no FM though ~ The TwinHan Alpha is very similar just different styling. The TwinHan MagicBox Pro has FM but in a larger form factor. Just be suspicious of any of the little stick products with silicon tuners as opposed to tradition can type tuners. Although they have improved a lot in the last couple of years they still don't seem to perform as well ~ And make sure they have stable and supported BDA (MCE) drivers available. One day you will undoubtedly want to use 3rd party software and / or want Win64 driver support. http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showforum=9 http://forums.dvbowners.com/index.php?act=idx http://www.tv-cards.com/messageboard/index.php

Any product from Hauppauge. They have the best comstumer service. I told them my dog chewed one of the cables that came with their product and they mailed me a replacement, for free! Also, I emailed them a tech support question and had an answer with in one day. They really are a great company.
