Did anyone see the Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard) demo on WWDC2006? If not, you should. Go to apple.com where there is a link to the QuickTime video. I wonder if Microsoft would develop something like TimeMachine in Vista. EDIT: Here is the link to the Leopard demo screenshot[^]

What is wrong with Quicktime? It kicks WMV all over the park when embedded.

Nothing wrong with the format. The standalone player is as painful as RealPlayer though.

Yeah the system tray thing is annoying but is easily removed in the settings. As for the file format issue you just click No when it asks you. Windows Media Player also wants to play for everything.

I've got 6.3 and it does. IIRC, that was the last version before they included iTunes, so I avoided it from then on. I notice, however, that they now offer the 7.1 player without iTunes. I may have to have a look at it some time.

OSX is cool, but there are some much stuff that needs to be de-activated to have a streamlined and optimized OS! first thing I will do if when I upgrade to Leopard, is to disabled all that new junk, on an non-intel PowerwBook, all those new features are taking too much CPU time. TimeMachine looks interresting, only because it can works per application.

You don't see a WTF in spawning hundreds of threads ?? Or using code found on places like codeproject.com in production applications ... Code that is most likely untested, or barely test, more often than not, not made by reputable developers/development groups/etc ?? .... Wow ...

And then it tries to take over your entire machine. I don't remember asking QuickTime to play MP3's or MPEG's inside my browser window. I really appreciate it taking 10 times longer than it used to to play a music file, though.

I forgot to deselect a couple of associations when I installed it initially. Later on when I realized that for some reason all my MP3 files in firefox were played using stupid builtin quicktime plugin I tried to delete associations, it did nothing. I completely uninstalled it and now every time there is embedded audio in the page it gives me an error. Fvsk quicktime, fvsk apple... I will not be installing anything apple on my machine anymore. The only good it is for is playing movie trailers from apple.com anyway so not a huge loss. And what's funny, the reason I installed it last time to watch a couple of movie trailers, but guess what, it didn't work, the sound stuttered like crazy so I couldn't hear anything.

I think your problem comes from Firefox. Firefox uses his own file associations database, and Firefox sometimes forgets to refresh its file associations database when something changes in your system. Try it with IE or Opera to be sure. I think Quicktime has nothing to do with that. ;)
