You have to remember that the 2nd amendment was only a prohibition upon the federal government. Under Jeffersonian principles, state and local governments could exercise gun control all they liked and have frequently done so. But as I said below, guns, like cars, are such an instrinsic part of our culture, it is going to be virtually impossible to get rid of them to any meaningful extent.

    Thank God for disproportional force.

My 5. No enemy is as difficult for a traditional Army to combat as is an armed indigenous insurgency. Nukes, ballistic missiles, tanks, helicopters, and heavy artillery are little help.

They're also really annoying conversationalists. I mean, i thought potheads were bad, but at least potheads just waste a lot of time stating the obvious and laughing about it. Methheads don't seem to even bother noticing the obvious, they just keep talking, a mile a minute, about whatever pops into their heads. It's no wonder they have such a reputation for violence - they probably need to start shooting or brawling every now and then, just to give their jaws a rest... (yeah, there are a lot of drug users around out here)

I can just imaging Kyle hanging around, drinking, with his mates. One of them, perhaps he doesnt know him that well, starts messing around with the rifle. Loads a .762 round, and bang. It'll kill a man at 2 miles. At close range, it'll go straight through you and the wall behind. Yep, he could become one of those stats a lot easier than my kid.

Traditionally, the concept was based on the 9th and 10th amendments - those powers not specifically granted to the federal government by the constitution belonged to the states and to the people. (That was always considered the 'Jeffersonian' solution.) Over the course of the 20th century, however, the federal courts began more and more to use the 14th amendment to give the federal government more and more power based upon judicial interpretations of "equal protection". (This is clearly not a Jeffersonian approach but indicates, to many, such as myself, the introduction of generally Marxist concepts into our political system.) So, no, the states could never 'contradict' federal law, but if the federal government could not do something, state and local governments frequently did and until recently, the federal courts had no problems with it. For example, simply because the 2nd amendment prohibited the federal government from restricting gun ownership, the states were completely free to do so. That was what American federalism was originally all about.

Then the Bill of rights has no value at the State level, right? The 50 states could then decide to use torture without violating the constitution. Is there no Bill of Rights for the individual States?

I've never seen one, i hope to never be one. :) The closest i've been was earlier this year, while my car was in the shop, i sat reading in the office, a few blocks to the east some guy drove a jacked SUV through the window of a shop, walk across the street, pulled a mother of two from her car and drove off (with her kids still in the back seat). Interestingly, his shotgun had been wrestled away by the owner of the SUV and thrown out prior to the crash. Realistically, in this town of under 100K, there are only a handful of carjackings. If i wanted to worry, getting hit by inattentive drivers would be a far bigger possibility. :)

Who pissed in your oatmeal? If i'd said i dislike skiers 'cause the power makes 'em arrogant dicks, you'd take offense at that too? I didn't talk about the neighbors manufacturing the shit. I didn't talk about the two friends beating each other senseless as paranoia and burnout took over. I didn't talk about the other friend who lost her kids, or my wife's former employer who lost her business. So why not wait 'till i make a serious post about meth before getting all defensive.

Honestly? No. I don't think it helped any, but their behaviors are such that without any drugs there'd still be problems. Speaking personally, i react badly to anything stronger than coffee, so i avoid strong stimulants so as to avoid problems. A lot of people don't. At some point, it's like the guy passed out behind the liquor store with old vomit clinging to his beard - you don't know what led him there, but it doesn't matter, you know where he is now.

Then the Bill of rights has no value at the State level, right? The 50 states could then decide to use torture without violating the constitution. Is there no Bill of Rights for the individual States?

Traditionally, yes. But, then, the theory of American federalism is that the best way of protecting a society from torture, for example, is to get the decision making power about torture as close to those who would be the victims of it as possible. If you leave that power in the hands of some sort of centralized elite, constitution or no constitution, the odds of torture happening on a grand scale go up accordingly. The US constitution, expecially the bill or rights, is all about getting as much power as practically possible out of the hands of the federal government. That is precisely why the founders would have been so appalled by the current power of the courts. That isn't what they intended

Yes, I believe most states have their own in some form or other.
