I'll throw this out for you and others to think about. Even if the only new feature Vista has is better security then it's worth it. Why do I say that? It's because Vista was darned near a total re-write. While many people are evaluating Vista purely based upon new gidgets and gadgets which really do nothing for me I'm pleased to see Microsoft cutting out the crap to hopefully turn out a stable and secure platform. All that other crap can come later. If Vista is stable and secure those are the two most important features and I don't care what anyone else says that's a big deal at least for me. I'll upgrade and am still looking forward to it. Eye candy, command line frills and all that other jazz is just jazz. I'd love to see something come out of Microsoft that was *rock* solid and secure. I'd pay bars of gold to get a Microsoft product that was anywhere near as good as BSD. That would just be sweet. Now having said all of this. I'll state openly that Microsoft over-promised and under-delivered on to much in Vista and it's going to kill them. If they had kept out the lace and frills and just focused on a core system it would have been a lot better for them.

Why not just use BSD now and save the gold?

Today morning I read the Daily Developer news from Codeproject by Jordon. in that mail, I saw one news "Microsoft cuts ANOTHER feature: full HD playback in 32bit Vista goes[^]" So in the first release, what all features they will have? Just new GUI and some new concepts of Microsoft on Operating system? Are they really incorporating some new technologies with RC1?

But Mac and Windows steal/borrow from one another constantly.

Give examples of the Mac OS copying off of Windows. $20 says you have to use Google to try and justify that statement. Even still, you're going to be hard pressed to back that claim up. I'm prepared to give you at least five examples of Windows copying off of Macs. The only one thing remotely close I can think of for Apple copying MS is preemptive multithreading, but that's really wasn't a MS only thing anyway. But, I'll play fair and say that's one. I'll throw in easy user switching on XP as a freebie that MS copied and won't even count that as one of the 5.

Timevault or whatever it is and no I didn't use Google. Microsoft had it first. Anyway I don't really care. I can go through pleny of Mac products and find Microsoft influences and vice versa. iCal, iMail, iCopyUAndUCopy me. I'm not hard pressed on anything. I read a list of the different "borrowing" each company has done off the other and it goes both ways. So you can do your homework on Google me... I could care less.

You obviously cared enough to make the claim. I'm not trying to be anal here (ok maybe I am ), but let's not spread FUD. MS isn't the creative bunch.

Sorry, but that's just crap. Most simple products like that are influenced by a lot of factors in the industry besides just two companies. A simple example, AOL actually had color text in their messenger first, but *everyone* has that. Sure, it may have started like that, but it's not an example of Apple copying off of MS directly. I'm refering to specific functionality that was copied. I'm telling you right now, it's a one way street man.

Here's another one for ya... the start menu copied off the apple menu. This is a specific feature I can name off the top of my head. I have plenty, plenty more.

I could care less to get into some contest where *this* must be proved or *that* must be proved. I think comments about Windows stealing from Mac and Mac stealing from Windows are petty and annoying. You do find Ford accusing Chevy of stealing the "steering wheel" idea. You don't find GMC accusing Chevy of stealing the "dashboard" idea. There's going to be overlap and some ideas are good enough to reproduce. Who really cares... not me that's for sure. If it first appeared in a toaster and it's now in Windows fine. Everything *else* I don't need is in Windows so what's one more thing... I'm hardly worried about your list. Those types of conversations do nothing for me... I get bored before they start...

That may be your stance and more power to you. Just don't spread the FUD then if you can't at least give examples about what you're saying when you claim about Apple copying off of MS. Anyway, I don't want this to turn into an argument (which I think it's where it's headed), so I'm gonna stop now. Have fun, eat tacos, be merry, and stay open minded.

 Stance on what? That I don't care? Spread what? Gimme a break. Apple and Microsoft borrow stuff from each other. It happens there's a long history of it. If you don't like that and you feel you need names and dates to prove it fine go find them. I can accept it. When I was in school I watched a 3 hour video on exactly that that interviewed Gates, Jobs and Wozniack(SP?) where they openly discussed it. I don't have anything to prove because I don't care. You want proof go find it. You want examples I'm not interested in going and finding them. I had an entire class on ethics once and it listed several. That class almost bored me as much as this conversation. If you want facts go look for them. You'll find them. The part about me not wanting to be your fact-finder hardly has anything to do with posting. If we had to provide facts for everything we said nobody would post. To damn much work. If I have to provide facts that makes this discussion legal and I don't care. If facts are important to you be your own fact-finder and go look. It's a public message board and factless things get stated here all the time. Either challenge everyone for facts or leave this alone. It's all or nothing and when you start challenging everyone for facts I'll be long gone because it just got to complicated for me. I'm not turning in a research paper, things I say are not being used in court and most importantly ... I don't care.

I'd be willing to wager there's more than meets the eye with that video. Let's get practical. I'm going off the fact I've used both the Mac OS and Windows for years. Guess which one of the two 9 out of 10 times comes out with the same exact features after the other?

How can you hope to make a point on something you don't have a clue about then? That's called FUD dude. You're spreading FUD or at the very least just copying someone else's opinion if you can't back it up with examples. Anyway, I'm out (again, yeah I suck at this).

Quite the opposite, if there is a ton of new code, then there is a ton of code that is set for new vulnerabilities. Also, when you said "near total rewrite", you may want to explain a little bit what you mean. I don't think WIN32 is getting rewritten. You know, there is that thing they call "backwards compatibility"... PS : don't eat too much Microsoft PR, that's unhealthy.

My 5. Didn't Microsoft dumped the managed code they wrote for Vista because it's too slow and went back to the old codebase?

NT never expected to have hardware come and go while it was powered up. And never expected to have parts of it put to sleep randomly in an attempt to save power. So alot of the underlying system finds it very hard to handle these events. Vista is an atrempt to get it right. And certainly some is new, like the USB system, but I am sure alot is still old XP stuff. But I agree with you, it would be nice to get a Windows OS that was as good as NT4 was (in its way), however, if MS didnt bring out new stuff, often without need (as in who really needs Vista anyway?) there wouldnt be so much work for us, so I dont mind too much if MS keep bringing crap to market.
