After 21 years working as a bartender in a major casino resort in Las Vegas I tendered my resignation. So, now this hobbiest has a question for all you lounge lizards... As a hobbiest programmer what can I emphasize that might convince an employer to take a shot with me? Did I mention no more smoke-filled casinos?!

When was the last time you poured some wine for you and your sweetie and went out on the front porch to watch the geometry frolic on the lake?--Rebecca M. Riordan, Designing Effective Database Systems

How about working for a company that builds casino games? It is a lot of fun and you do have to figure out how to beat the crooks who are bent upon cheating at the games.

My boss hired a guy with a 2-year web programming degree but all he seems to know is JavaScript. The HR person really pushed my boss to hire him so the company can "mold" him. If I were looking to hire a programmer (which I've done in the past) who didn't have formal training I would want to see a home grown project that can be applied to the business world. Take some common business problem and come up with a usable solution. Show me documentation, how it works, etc.

You could try to get a job testing for one of the several gaming machine developers.

Seriously? I don't know about the industry as a whole, but from personal experience it's rare for that many testers to graduate into the main development team - usually testing happens at the end half of a product cycle, and then most of the QA's short contracts end, the developers start pre-production on the next game, and a whole new lot of QA are brought in when needed

The only one we didn't go to last November. We stayed at the Balley's and visited almost all hotels including Circus Circus. But we were exhausted cause we didn't know about the buses and decided not to go to Sahara's. :)

Monorail would've got you there in better fashion.
