What, to cheap? ;P Frankly, the pricing isn't what concerns me, it's the 7 (or 9, or 900) flavors of Vista. The real cost of having to test an application on all these different versions far outweighs the cost of the OS itself. And then, beyond the OS versions, there's the issues of how the hardware affects the OS's presentation and performance. What a nightmare. Marc

In my experience, the OEM CDs are identical to the retail versions. For instance, if you get a brand new HP, it's full of crap you never ever wanted. Reinstall it with the OEM disc that comes with it, and you get a clean machine. On the other hand, the machines I've dealt with are models that are targeted for professional use (which may differ a lot from those HP PCs which are targeted at home users).

The difference is that an OEM license is bound to the specific hardware it's installed on (IIRC the mobo), and cannot legally by transfered to a new machine. AFaik enforcement is only via WGA with XP, but there's the possibility it might be built more deeply into feture releases.

I doubt it'll be enforced by some kind of software/hardware. You can buy OEM versions of Windows for installation on a brand new computer with no OS preinstalled... Unless, of course, palladium becomes a reality.

The OEM version can only be installed on the machine you bought it with. This means you can't change the motherboard in your box. This means people that build their own machines (like me) would be ill-advised to purchase an OEM copy. I'm sure even the OEM versions will be way over-priced as well. At this price-point, it costs less to buy a Mac than it does to buy Vista Ultimate and build your own computer.

Then you install the version on your pc and is obliged to attach the sticker to your cabinet. Followingly, if you change any hardware from which the hash-code (or whatever it is) that the license has bound itself to, you will be requested to re-register the operating system. This also applies to any pre-installed version from HP, Dell or whatever. However, you can just re-register with the newly generated hash-code and repeat that process each time you change motherboard, disk, graphics card etc. untill you reach a limit (3 times I think) - then you have to call their automated phone service where you enter a code generated on your screen and they give you a new code so that re-registering works anyway. In short: get an oem with a disk or something like that and use that. It's cheaper, but you cannot resell it. Would you ever do that anyway ? Not likely.

out of curiosity, what're the list, as opposed to retail, prices for XP? I know there's a decent sized gap between the two, but don't recall how big it is.
XP Home is $189 (I think), and XP Pro is $299. Updgrade prices are about $100 cheaper, and oem is like $50 cheaper. And IMHO, it's still over-priced...

I like the Macs, but linux is far from being a contender. Heck, sometimes, you can't even install the OS, and the newer your hardware, the less likely it is that your install will be a reasonably good experience. I think their claim to fame that Linux *will* run on really old hardware much better than Windows should actually be phrased as Linux will *only* run on really old hardware.

Who's they? Microsoft? Remember that retailers, Microsoft included, will only charge what people are willing to pay. If people are willing to pay $233 for Vista Home Basic, they'd be foolish to charge less. I'd be more inclinded to blame the consumers.
