because it is more exciting. There are programs to visit the depths of the ocean. They get minor grants, minor coverage, and even when they discover a new species of octopus or squid, no one cares. Finding the Titanic got some coverage, but it got more when they turned it into a movie. The ocean is already here, therefore it is ignored, Mars is out there, it is unknown and beyond reach, therefore it is the goal... the grass is always greener... even when the soil is red. ;)

Why bother exploring Mars when Earth is so close by? There are still lots of unknown about earth and the ocean. I am open to discuss.:)
why bother studying physics when there are unsolved math problems ?

None of those were found on the Moon, but all of them were found on the path to the Moon. Choosing to go no where, with no path, no hope, no goal, no drive, no hole to fill... that is the only bad path. Good point. We havent given up on studying our oceans etc...we just arent limiting ourselves to only that.

it ties the math together and gives it meaning. Superstring/m-theories have tied together much of the last centuries purely theorectical work. The two are now driving each other, since much of the math the theories need doesn't exist at present.
