Bike Riding
-
Got the bikes out of storage just under a couple of weeks ago. Pulled out the air compressor and instantly blew the tube in my rear tyre to pieces. The inspiration for all of this was my son (just over 9.5 years old), he has a bike riding excursion coming up next term. Now the average 9 year old is able to ride a bike with no problems. I haven't in the past few years had the time to devote to my son's (or daughter's though I have coached his soccer team for the past 4 years) sporting development due to shitty jobs and struggling to keep the income somewhere around the outgoing. On top of that he is a mini-me, an exact replica not only in looks but temprement/personality to boot. So when he doesn't want to learn to ride without training wheels he ain't going to fucking (yeah, yeah kid sister and all that, but even his kid sister knows about that word) learn and that's that. Well now he has a deadline and a desire to learn. We have been down to the park 5 or 6 times since we got the bikes out. After 5 minutes on the training wheels I had to take them off. First go he was able to get his balance and ride, though he needed my help to take off and continued to go arse over tits when he stopped (Dad can't be everywhere to help when I had the little sister to look after too). Now he gets himself going, goes for hours and can stop himself. Today we were up and down small hills without a problem. Final step is the confidence to go on the footpath or raod (under supervision of course), reckon by the weekend this will be done. Got to say I am loving this part of fatherhood. Had myself on my bike (finally got the tube replaced) today down the park chasing him around.

I'm already a huge fans of his! Not many 9 year olds would have the guts to ride a bike with training wheels. Shows a lot of courage that he's willing to do whatever it takes to learn.

When my dad taught me how to ride a bike all I had was a big adult sized 10 speed that someone had bought at a garage sale, my feet couldn't touch the ground, I think I was 7 at a guess. So we went out on the road in front of our house, he held it while I climbed on then gave it a hard shove down the road...much like how he taught me to swim as I recall. :) I think his philosophy was always "either you can do it right away when you really have to or you can't".
