He may not have been a serious scientist but eccentric Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin, who died in a freak diving accident this week, was an extremely effective environmentalist, a survey said on Thursday. Read More from Reuters[^]

To be honest, I thought he was a total joke until I saw him on a talk show. Having seen him interviewed ( as opposed to his show ), I decided he was a pretty cool sort of a guy, although there was definately a cringe factor, you can't fault a bloke for being who he is.

What good is a scientist is he does not know how to grab a snake ? Many other shows are on Animal Planet, but so far I have not seen anyone wrestle a croc with his bare hands. I think Jeff Corwin is a PhD, but that does not necessarily mean he is more knowledgeable than someone who is self learnt. I think the others are like astronomers, but Steve was an astronaut. Big difference.

I couldn't agree more. Most of the cats on Animal planet seem skitish around small critters (Jack Hannah). Steve Irwin was and is inspiring and very motovational to understanding ecosystems and taking care of the planet. Goal #14 - Wrestle a bloody big gator before I turn 30

There are lots of people (I personally know a few) who do on a daily basis what he did for the camera: wrestling crocs and dodging snakes, but none that have quite the charisma that he did. That kind of "Eddie Murphy cross Bill Cosby" look that came across his face when explaining something totally deadly, was probably what got him on international TV, and kept us entertained for years. If he had survived the sting ray I wonder how he would have explained it to us: "wham, like a powerfull lightning bolt to the chest...."

Beware, Goal #14 could turn into 'Wrestle a bloody big gator instead of turning 30' All the Best Julian

He is loved by everyone. I was really amazed by his reach. In India,No other forigner in this department would be known so popularly as steve. He's great. Kids enjoy his show, even I do :(.
