Yes it is a serious bug. I just tried it. My machine froze, screen turned black and finally there was BSOD.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it. -Brian Kernighan

so, if a virus, malicious program manages to: "place a plain text file onto the computer" you are in serious danger of never being able to use the machine??? what if the exe in question is explorer, or some such? now would be a good time to tell me i have mis-understood the knowledge base article... please? i am oscillating between "this cannot be real" and "please tell me someone make this up", with visits to "the irony is unreal" maybe i need to get more sleep :)

Heheh...that would be interesting, wouldn't it. Might be an experiment for a VMWare instance.

How's it feel to be the man?if you try i would certainly like to know the answer. i am curious as to just how bad the obvious "worse case" scenario is. i agree, VERY much a VMWare test :)

How's it feel to be the man?I was able to reproduce the crashes as well. Glad I didn't try it on my dev box :)

Well, I made an Explorer.exe.manifest file. So yeah, if I hadn't had to login to the machine (explorer doesn't load until after the GINA subsystem takes care of authenticating domain users), it would have literally been an infinite BSOD loop.

I'll do that tomorrow when I get to work. I left the VM instance on an external drive there. This could be fun. :-D
