German Nazi Party gains seats

Since a basic premise of their philosophy is absolute detication to the state, and complete state control of the economy, I would say that they were indeed socialist. Left-wing does not preclude rasist, nor does right-wing imply it.
The Nazis consciously wished to create an unequal society while maintaining existing commercial structures.. Something which isn't present in socialist rhetoric (if not practice). The command economy and statism fits though.

No they're not.
yes they are

Then clearly you don't understand the term. Just because the Nazis happened to have the word "socialism" in their name doesn't make them socialist. It's just one of history's little ironies.
Not really true. Hitler was every much anti-capitalist. Germany, being in a bad depression, gravitated toward state control and socialism.

Just because they are right wing you call them Nazis? Why? Was Thatcher a Nazi? How about Pin Fortyne? How about Vlams Block? Front Nationale? edit-> Europe is moving to the right. It is only the spectre of Nazism that stops it moving faster. Le Pen (Front National in France) came second to Chirac in the run offs in 2001. Sweden yesterday elected a right wing government. Vlams Bloc has over 30% of the vote in northern Belgium. Holland elected Pin Firtuyne to power. Is it a bad thing? Many here complain about Islam, and the decay of western culture, the right wing will lessen that. <-edit

Which also happens to be an extreme right-wing, facist, philosophy. It is interesting that both ends of the political spectrum resemble each other so much in practice (another irony), but they are not the same and typically hate each other. Hence while the Nazis hated communists and had many members of the German communist parties arrested, deported and/or murdered.

It's confusion on both sides of the atlantic. I think it's time for mainstream media to use the two dimensional political measurements. That would put nazis on a left/authoritarian position. Maybe the "right wing" label comes from the fact that they are right of socialism (but not that much) on the economic scale..?

In case of war or threats of war, you'll be forced to pick up weapons if you're not disabled or too old.

I find it difficult to think of National Socialism as "right-wing" maybe extreme left wing, certainly statist, racist and collectivist, but hardly conservative or right-wing.

Pin Firtuyne
Pim Fortuyn was not "far right", he was a social liberal, economic moderate and garish populist. He once debated a prominent dutch imam on live television, Pim flaunted his homosexuality, said imam snapped and went into a frothing at the mouth homophobic rant amply demonstrating his opponents point. That pretty much sums up the mans position. He was smeared as a Nazi (not least by the BBC) and killed by a crazed hippie who believed he was doing the right thing: "I confess to the shooting. He was an ever growing danger who would affect many people in society. I saw it as a danger. I hoped that I could solve it myself."

OK, in that case our news is screwed. It was stated that a center right party had been elected. Is this not the case?
Truth is the subjection of reality to an individuals perception
It's a coalition of 4 parties: The moderate party (liberals), center party (liberals), people's party (liberals), christian democrats (conservative). It's right, if your point of view is from the left. I hold the opinion that it is center. Had the election been 20 years ago, then it would've been right wing. The center is what the parties are fighting for these days...
