In case of war or threats of war, you'll be forced to pick up weapons if you're not disabled or too old.

I think it was well past that point in 1946.

the right wing
I find it difficult to think of National Socialism as "right-wing" maybe extreme left wing, certainly statist, racist and collectivist, but hardly conservative or right-wing.

Pin Firtuyne
Pim Fortuyn was not "far right", he was a social liberal, economic moderate and garish populist. He once debated a prominent dutch imam on live television, Pim flaunted his homosexuality, said imam snapped and went into a frothing at the mouth homophobic rant amply demonstrating his opponents point. That pretty much sums up the mans position. He was smeared as a Nazi (not least by the BBC) and killed by a crazed hippie who believed he was doing the right thing: "I confess to the shooting. He was an ever growing danger who would affect many people in society. I saw it as a danger. I hoped that I could solve it myself."

OK, in that case our news is screwed. It was stated that a center right party had been elected. Is this not the case?
Truth is the subjection of reality to an individuals perception
It's a coalition of 4 parties: The moderate party (liberals), center party (liberals), people's party (liberals), christian democrats (conservative). It's right, if your point of view is from the left. I hold the opinion that it is center. Had the election been 20 years ago, then it would've been right wing. The center is what the parties are fighting for these days...

True. The joke in the UK is that Blair is a blatant Thatcherite. And his closeness to Bush indicates this. The hardcore socialists in the party hate him.

The National Democratic Party comfortably exceeded the 5 % hurdle necessary to win seats. It will now sit in the state's regional assembly in Schwerin for the first time.[^]
This morning's German papers, reporting on the poll and yesterday's election in Berlin, gave a gloomy reaction. Der Tagesspeigel said there was no point in pretending that the NPD's voters - most of them under the age of 30 - had somehow been tricked into voting for a bunch of unashamed racists. "Whoever voted for this party, knew what they were doing," the paper said.

After reading the responses, I think it's time for me to say a few words. The NPD - which could not be forbidden a few years ago, but maybe will be forbidden very soon - is a "nothing". They gained over 5% only in eastern germany. The eastern states are special in three ways: 1) There is extremely high unemployment. I've read about towns in which 30% of the inhabitants are unemployed. People are even tired of raging against the system. 2) There are almost deserted areas in the east. All young and smart people moved away to find work in the west on in big cities. Many small villages in the east consist of nothing but old guys who were raised in the GDR and young idiots who are too stupid to finish school and find work somewhere else. Most "normal" voters already have left. Schools get closed down, empty houses are decaying, people are keen on any change they can imagine. 3) There are people voting for the Nazi party NPD. Well, how might point 3 be related to 1 and 2? Right, the eastern villages are not what we usually know as "Germany". In the rest of the country, AFAIK the NPD never gains more than 1% - and people have work and a future. Could it be that the unemployed Ossis are not all Nazis, but try to wake up the government? Some areas of eastern Germany are a piece of crap, while others plus the whole west are quite well off. Something has to happen over there, but no politician really cares about it. Now that the Nazis are holding one or two seats, the other parties will wake up... Greetings from western Germany, coco

Nasty. The racist nationalist parties will be making a return all over Europe before long. 3 guesses why.

WTF!? Hello Germans? Are you there? Are you awake?!

 Awake? Oh, well, yes ... it will take us a while to wake up. All thing that are going fast in other countries take a while in Germany. Anyway, I'm quite sure we will wake up before the Nazi party gains more than 1% outside the "dark zone" parts of our country.

I hope so. It'd be a damn shame if history were to repeat itself, when this continent finally has mostly found peace. :rose:

Hasn't there been recent gains in Austria for the far right? The UK is certainly seeing a resurgence in support for the BNP. Le Penn's support goes without saying. It isn't 1928, but there definitely seems to be a trend.

He was also pro Dutch culture and anti immigration. Socialist he was, and a Nationalist. Put the two together and what do you get?

...and the Nazi movement rose to power because the people were tired of the poor conditions existing in Germany after the first World War. Certainly I'm not implying all Germany is becoming Nazi again; that's a ludicrous idea. However, I find it disturbing that the same poor conditions yield the same scary result. What would happen if all of Germany came into depression and unemployment?
