Unscientific survey time - how many hours / week do you spend working? This would include paid or unpaid overtime, plus moonlighting. Taking time off to spend some time training does not count... Curious.

Friend, listen to the wise old programmers. If you are salary, they are stealing from you. I'm not talking about the hour here and there, the emergency (true emergency) on the weekend. But I've learned that if they are not willing to pay you for your time, it isn't that important. Period. Do not ever forget you are in business.

Well put Charlie, I put a stupid amount of hours into work, when I was younger, as you get older (and wiser) you begin to realize that you are working for free - certainly not a good idea. And whats even worse, the longer you continue to work for free the more the company expects it.

Usually 37.5, sometimes an hour or two more but rarely more. My last pay rise (half the one I had the year before) says not to work longer than needed - I don't get paid overtime.

At the company at work for the minimum amount of work that can be done is 35 hours a week. Our working day is from 8:00am to 4:30pm but we get an hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks. Almost everyone leaves right at 4:30 too. If I left the office 5 minutes late over half the parking lot is empty.

45 is average. I find a 9 hour day is enough, particularly if i am in a support phase. Get me into a pure codeing phase though and I can crank it up a lot because I dont find design and coding tiring.

I work for a company that's a little out of the norm in this respect, in that the building is cleared out and locked at a very decent hour. Thus, no way to get much over 42-45 hours, even by working through your lunch. Don't we need more companies like this? Another interesting question would be, How many hours/week do you spend working on your own personal projects? Think that I'd be nearing at least 30 hours on this figure. Mitch

Oh, but I do!! I get time and a half for hours over the 38...so, overtime can be a useful wage supplement (boosted my take home by about 1/3 last year :-O)

About 60 hours a week with one full-time gig and a client with a windows application I wrote. This is about all the time I have. If I go over that, it cuts into my sleeping time, or I starve cuz I don't have time for food :)
