Our current government, and the corporatocracy that it has become, and the apathy of many Americans and their disregard for what our country does to other countries (and to people at home as well), are things to be very ashamed of. But I think our heritage - the ideals our country was founded on, and those in our country who have made great achievements for humanity, and the freedom and opportunity that our forefathers gave us and we have been privleged to enjoy, are things to be very proud of. In that context I can understand someone being excited and proud to become a US citizen.
True enough, it's just to bad that the former so dramatically outweighs the latter in this day.

Then explain to me how my comments, by starting with I mean no offense, are rude, and why my opinion should be in the soap-box while yours, calling me rude and ignorant, are worthy of the lounge.

I mean no offense, but why would you want, or need, to be a US Citizen? As one myself, I'm ashamed of this country and the way we (in general) treat the rest of the world. BTW, I've spent about 10 years in the past living outside the US so I think I have a somewhat outsider's viewpoint.

Hmmm, interesting questions. I've lived here nearly four years; will be living here, hopefully, many more. Whilst I wouldn't say living here as an 'alien' is all that tough, surely there's merit in choosing to become a part of the society in which I now, by choice, live?

Yeah, and I spent a bit over 48 years living outside the US. I think I definitely qualify as having an outsiders viewpoint! Without wanting to tread on soapbox territory I'd posit that the outsiders view of the US (as a global power) is just as (in)accurate as the view of the most insular US inhabitant who's never been out of the country. Most of the 'Americans' I work and socialise with in my day to day life are fine upstanding folk - why wouldn't I want to become a part of that?

One word: enfranchisement. Having had the vote for 30 years in Australia it was quite difficult, on polling day, to be unable to vote. This gives me the right to cast a vote in the community of which I'm a part. It also gives me license to hold and express views about local and national politics.

Thank you. Now I understand another view point. It's a remarkable thing when different people can share thoughts and opinions and open their minds to different thoughts and viewpoints, all without resorting to insults, name calling, flaming, and least of all guns and bombs.
