The one in front of me, it's installed and configured just the way I like it too. :)

By far my favourite laptop of the ones I own is the Asus[^] - but given that I only own 3 laptops that is not a representative survey...

My G4 iBook, because it's small, light, has good battery life and wakes up *instantly* on opening the screen. Now, if only I could justify the money for a Macbook or Macbook Pro, I could have most of those attributes *and* good performance - the 1.4GHz G4 ain't exactly quick...

I would suspect that most peoples favorite laptop is their own :). Personally, I like the HP nx6125 range. AMD 64 chip, good value for money compared with equivalent intel models, and hi res screen. Also, HP customer service / tech support has always been great for me (for business customers anyway). ChrisB
What about it's graphics performance?

Graphics performance is fine for what I do, but then I don't play that many games (Tankball works fine, though). It's a 15" screen with 1400 x 1050 which is a decent enough res, plus you can plug an external monitor in to it. ChrisB

Of the three I've owned (an HP Omnibook, Sony Vaio and Acer Travelmate) I'd say it was a toss-up between the Omnibook and Travelmate. One thing to look for is whether the hard disk and memory can be upgraded without opening the machine. Sony machines far very, very poorly on that score! The Acer and HP both have their ideosyncrasies, but either of them are likely to be a reasonable bet.

I own two laptops. One is Acer and the second is Toshiba. My Toshiba is superior to Acer in almost everything except graphics performance where my Acer has the upper hand. This doesn't represent all Acers and Toshibas. If you really want to choose, go to one of the computer magazines sites -eg. PC-Magazine-, and see bench marks of the models you want to buy. Also take care of the battery issue. Some batteries are making fireworks these days.:)

I like my Toshiba because of it's wide screen and hyperthreading processor. I like my Dell Inspiron because it's more portable--weighs less, smaller form factor and has great screen res. With two batteries in the bays, I can run a good 6 hours or more on battery power. I don't like the Toshiba's sunken keyboard. Gives me carpal tunnel, whereas I've never had any problems using the Dell keyboard. On both laptops, I upgraded the memory to 1GB and the hard disks to 7200 RPM. On the Toshiba, I actually have a second hard disk. Both have adequate performance for what I do, though on the Dell, I can't use the new Consolas font because it just kills scrolling, even though ClearType doesn't cause that problem with any other font. But both these machines are several years old. I was looking around to upgrade, but I frankly can't justify it right now because they do the job just fine, technology is changing too rapidly (it always changes, but it's really clipping along) and my client sent me a Core Duo desktop unit with a blazing fast video card, so I really have no reason to upgrade the laptops. Currently it's a fast machine. When the Core 2 Duo's come out it will be even nicer, so that's a bonus. Also: good battery life, good features such as bluetooth, Wifi, fast HDD, nice screen, the slot-loading DVD drive (why doesn't everyone do this?), the magentically coupled power cable (good safety feature), lightweight, and very slim. But most of all: because it was designed with class. It wasn't designed by engineers or geek boys. The thing has style.
cheers, Chris Maunder

Thinkpad is the best one. Got heck a lot of features around it. But the last one I had got heated up like an oven. I hate it when it starts to heat up. But all other features are really good. Now I have an Acer Travelmate. It's a low end notebook but decent enough. only 256 MB Ram :( though. But the wonder is it never gets heated up. Superb cool!!! very light too. I run it all the day but it cares a damn about the heat. But anyway I'm ordering a Dell Inspiron 6400 this month. just 700 USD. Damn good configuration. Core 2 Duo, 1 GB ram, Dual Layer DvD writer, 80 GB Sata. 15" wide screen. what else you want more?:->. Go for Dell it's quite affordable. If you have a heavy wallet, go for Thinkpads.. they are the best. may be the newer ones come with a better heat sink mechanism.
