MS strength outside USA

Hi guys, if you're from Europe or anywhere outside the US, how strong do you believe MS is where you live? I ask because I get the impression that European countries seem to be more eager to try out new (read, other than MS) technology than US entities. Seeing as MS still managed to INCREASE quarterly profits over last years 1Q profits, how is that even possible with the weak global economy, license increases, slow x-box and office xp sales, all that coupled with reports week in week out that we keep hearing about concerning defections to both Open Source software as well as Linux, especially outside the US. Dunno, creative accounting? MS is strong in the US, fine, but what about elsewhere? Europe? South America? What do you guys think? Regards Senkwe Just another wannabe code junky
Hi, I actually think MS is stronger in Europe than in the US. The problem with most software is that it is made for the US market (f.e. seldom in other languages than english, inches instead of mm etc.) whereas MS (who still makes software mostly with US in mind) has a lot of adaptions for different markets. In other regions (like China for instance) they don't have the money to buy MS products (and don't have a lot of previous investments in them) so they opt for other systems. Johannes

There is talk that unrealised profit was realised in this round, and that there was a one-off asset sale (forget the details) that may have helped boost the bottom dollar. cheers, Chris Maunder

The support in SA is pretty good. Monthly events: MSDN essentials, technet essentials, + other Yearly events: Devdays, TechEd. Two things that piss me off: 1. no MS development gets done here 2. For my country, Germany, I think MS has a position like in the US, strong economic power, every people who are new to the PC use their systems. Linux is an option to more experienced users and programmers.

That was in Belgium and had nothing to do with anti-microsoft activism but with an organisation dedicated to pelting the high & mighty with cake & pie. Bill Gates has been back to Belgium after that incident.

MS is quite strong in Belgium with several major contracts for the government & several major companies. Recently they struck a deal with the Department of Education to supply schools with very cheap Windows & Office licenses.
