What would you do if your Boss asks you to UNINSTALL FIREFOX

Ok a quick question now. I am dying to ask you guys this question. What would you do if at work, your boss asks (orders actually) you to UNINSTALL FIREFOX. Yes thats right, you've heard it right. UNINSTALL FIREFOX. He was saying it creates some "compatibility issues". :confused: I wish I could kick him in the shin. Give him a sound beating or what ever. But Never mind about that I'll do that once I quit the Job. Firefox rules.

I used to let little things get to me and it became apparent one day that it's a silly thing to allow. I'll be sincere and all that but I'm going to have fun! The challenge in this post is that I just took the OP word for word thinking that it was being made in the spirit of most lounge posts here. It seemed like a real WTF post and so I just acted on that. But I'm not following the posting antics here very well at all and from what I can see someone is spoofing ID's and being rather difficult for a few of the regulars. To me that's kind of funny to if it's the situation I think it is...:-D

I could care less about Firefox, but if I felt there was an issue like that at work, I'd look for another job, sure. I wouldn't leave unless I had other work to go to.

Well a few posts have clued me in that the facts of the OP may not be presented very clearly. It certainly changes my whole perspective. But if we're being told the truth it's not Firefox for me it's the principal of it. But again, there's a reason I'm self-employed and don't work for anyone. There's a reason my customers love me and keep me around. I think the second is the strength of the first and I'll keep it that way. I install whatever I want (on impulse most of the time) and I usually regret it later... Why oh why did I install that memory hog of an {insert application here}? Or use JRE for lack of a better product. How's the ear? Come to the U.S. and get some Tequin. That ear problem will run and hide forever after about 4 days.

Rex, is it fair to abuse someone when you do not know why he asked this person to remove Firefox? Maybe he had good enough reasons - technical, and legal, in doing so. Also remember that you are making your judgement based on a post made by a guy who said he'd like to kick his Boss when he quits from the company.

Would you really want to stay in a place that was that paranoid, mis-informed and controlling? I wouldn't at all. I'd especially hate to stay there long enough that I was somehow dependant on the job working for the fruit cake. I'd leave in a heart beat if I was working for a junior hitler like that. That's just insane, stupid, crass, ignorant, FUBAR, etc... There's no way I'd stay in a situation that was that prickly. Having said all of this if the guy is normally stable, easy to work with and company policy says Firefox cannot be installed I'd never have installed it to begin with. If it's some whim of this turkey though I'd blast out of there in a hurry.

THere is IMO a big difference between "I don't want to work here anymore and am going to start looking for a new job" and "I don't want to work here, I'm quitting now and hopefully can find a new job before collection agencies skin me alive". Unless you're independently wealthy and don't have to worry about the second, immediately quitting over something like this is stupid.

What if he works at Microsoft? I used to work for a Pepsi distributor in a regional bottling and sales plant and it was a dead serious unwritten rule that if you walked into work drinking a Coke you were fired. They took it very seriously. They even gave us crap if we ordered in delivery food from a place that wasn't a Pepsi account or went out for a company dinner at a place that wasn't a Pepsi account.

Its not that I really wanted to give him a beating or something. I was really pissed off about it and I was ranting. I did however uninstall Firefox. The reason he did not want firefox on my machine is because the web app we are working on is supposed to work on IE only. I however use firefox for my browsing, but he doesn't want that to happen at all.

Ouch! In that case, get him to sign a clause, any work of his running on FireFox will be 'undefined' (read: make it intentionally incompatible :p ). Hopefully your boss will get a few screamers complaining ;P

They took it very seriously. Unwritten rule, huh? Because I gotta wonder if that's legitimate grounds for dismissal, if one was so inclined as to challenge it.

Still at the old one. Went to the interview, they offered me pre-tax what I told them I wanted post-tax. Needless to say I didn't take the job. A more stressful job with way more responsibilities and less money, not for me.
