Well the time is finally here. The division that I work(ed) for at Intel[^] (MCPD - Modular Communications Platform Division) has been officially transitioned over to being owned by Eicon Networks[^] and soon to become officially running under the new name of Dialogic[^]... Part of my agreement to go to the new company was a nice healthy bonus check of a few months pay so I just found my self facing the quandary of what to do with the recent influx of 'found money' that I had. Above an beyond paying some other bills (the responsible part of me :) ) I decided to treat my self with a new desktop since the old 3.2Ghz P4 was slowing down just a bit ;) Decided to go whole hog so to speak: Dual Intel Xeon 5050 3ghz 667mhz 4M Active 4GB DDR2 533MHz Fully Buffered Memory 2 - 400GB SATA 300 Hard Drives 2 Nvidia 5500 PCI Video cards Now I have to WAIT for it to arrive (7-10 business days). UGH! Can't wait to see how VS.NET runs on it :)

Sorry, old one is going to end up being the new server in the house. It's time to retire the old 800Mhz PIII when my copy of SBS 2003 R2 gets here.

You really need to write an article about how you convinced her to do that. Somehow, the toy budget in my house always seems to not be spent on toys for me :sigh:.

I agree with those that say put some into savings, I will say your retirement. I ask why the bonus. Are you now a new employee again? I.E. Is this really a payout of your benefits you are loosing?

Heh, I would say Herb Sutter is right again. The free lunch is over.[^] Until 5 years ago, I would replace my old machine with something that runs on at least 3 times higher frequency. Now, we are going to count cores.

No problem with that where my systems are. My office is all the way up in the attic on the third floor. All the heat in the house goes up into my Office all year long. I always have to worry about keeping my office cool, event in the winter really.
