My response to this article is not appropriate for the lounge:sigh:

Yeah - craziness abounds. Over here in the UK, we used to collect conkers from horse-chestnut trees and play a game called (cunningly enough) conkers. Basically the point of this game was to hit the other persons conker (ooh err missus) and smash it up. Recently, a local council decided that collecting the conkers was too dangerous, so they had workmen up the trees collecting them for the kids. How the F did we ever survive as kids?

If you've ever seen the movie Demolition Man, there's a line from Simon Phoenix that quickly comes to mind, describing what he thinks the world has become while he was frozen. I'd elaborate, but I have a kid sister.

Are you referring to the "Brady Bunch" quote?

I can see this going on and on. Just think in a few years they are going to outlaw the monkey bars and climbing aparatus. Soon recess will only be "Ok class it's time for recess. Now put your books away and sit quietly at your desks."

Surely it'll be, "put your books away and sit quietly in your hermetically sealed HAZMAT suit"

Of course, you do all realize that it has nothing to do with concern for the safety of the children, and everything to do with avoiding lawsuits. We have entirely too many lawyers on this planet.

Sure but there are ways to get around that and it's harming children in the long run. You could make an argument for a lawsuit the other way as well.

Well, the U.S. certainly seems to.

no, you put the ball on a little stick, in front of the batter. you could call it a "tee", like in golf. then the game would be called T-Ball

Something I heard on the grapevine (that may or may not be correct) was that the real reason was down to a few isolated cases where children have had serious allergic reactions to the conkers, and as kids these days are getting more and more allergies they were taking precautions to prevent accidents, and inevitably lawsuits.

Yeah. Maybe in 20 years those children could sue the schools and government for taking away their childhood and ruining their chances to become a mature, stable, adult human being and instead turning them into rapists and robbers (they *only* want to play tag with the police ;P).
