10 Reasons to end Internet Explorer

I know, many people like IE and would never switch. But as for me, I think Internet Explorer is the worst piece of software Microsoft has ever wrote (all versions). Here are 10 good reasons to end IE: 1. Horrible layout. 2. Extremely bad Web Engine. I was designing a web page that looked awesome in Firefox and Opera and even SAFARI, but IE jacked it up all because of a missing margin that IE doesn't show. The whole header was pushed to the other side of the screen! :wtf: 3. MS is planning to make JavaScript not view in IE so everyone has to use VbScript, limiting designing capabilites for FF and Opera users! 4. You cannot customize IE or skin it (manually, not MS's skins or extensions). With Firefox, you can skin and customize Firefox anyway you want. Mozilla has a whole 500 pages of extensions people have designed for Firefox. (Let's see MS live up to that)!! 5. Annoying security alerts when downloading or even viewing a web page. 6. IE will block windows that you are trying to open thinking they are popups, but when an actual popup comes up (that you did NOT open), IE won't block it. 7. MS had to be a JERK and embed IE into windows so you cannot uninstall it. If MS didn't make an Operating System that 80% of people used, then I would switch to a Mac. But, I can't since I develope software and need to target the Majority of people which I cannot do using Mac. 8. No tabbed view of pages (IE7 has this and I heard that it locks up when switching tabs). 9. Some programs upon install, will install toolbars, menu options and ads. You cannot remove these either. 10. IE just sucks. Plus, they once made MS's website uncompatible with any browser except IE. :wtf: That's includig FF, Opera, Safari, Mozilla etc. And, Ms is monopolizing other companies. Like me for example, I am a hard working Software Developer, hoping to make a difference in the world of cyberspace someday and have my own well running company. But I don't want to buy out other buisnesses just so there's no competition! That's the whole point of a buisness. You fight for your company and you don't give up. Survival of the fitest. Microsoft just buys everyone out because they don't want people to switch to something better. What does that tell you... MS SUCKS and they don't want you to know it!! Unless you've got a design background to back this up it's just your preference. Microsoft has employed several standard design principles in their interface that are widely accepted and, in my opinion, they work just fine for most people.

In the past there have been a bunch of incompatibilities, especially with IE. That doesn't excuse any of the other browsers though. They all have issues and are all in an unfortunate position: do they change the behavior now and break many existing sites or do they leave well enough alone?

Huh? That would explain why they just released Beta 1 of their AJAX library. You know, so they would be incompatible with their own product. At least back up your rumours with something.

First of all, I'm a long-time Firefox user. That stated, your claims are bogus. #1. IE7's layout is basically Firefox's layout. #2. So because something doesn't work in IE, but does in FF and Safari, IE is bad? Now, if you want to argue whether FF is superior to IE6, you won't find an argument here. I'm undecided whether FF is superior to IE7. I'll probably say "yes", at least until the malware folks start targeting FF instead of IE.

Apparently it's you that doesn't get it. Did you read the beginning of my post? I wasn't lured or hooked. I use Firefox, Safari, Netscape, Opera, I.E. - heck until recently I even had a copy of NCSA Mosaic running on an old machine. I don't particularly like or dislike any of them. They're web browsers - I'm much more interested in how well the website I'm visiting works on the ones it supports.

I really don't know what you're talking about now. In your original post you talked about other applications installing toolbars. Those can be removed (HijackThis does a fine job of removing them). As for the other things - I've changed the settings and they work just fine for me. Maybe the settings can't be changed to suit your preferences which, for you, would be a problem.

I disagree with almost everything you say. I've used almost every browser that's been widely published and have always returned to IE since I honestly prefer it above all the rest. As a side note, I installed FireFox on my home systems and gave my wife and kids a chance to use both. All of them quickly went back to IE because they didn't like FireFox. (My wife is not very computer literate, but her complaints were very perceptive.)

I would have loved for my hard working company to be bought my Microsoft (it was my company in the literal sense.) My business partner and I tried our damndest, but our niche was just too small. Had we used any other operating system, we never would have found a publisher. In addition, only Windows and the Mac were capable of doing what our app did without a boatload of expensive libraries. (FYI, we used a combination of Macs and Windows sytems to produce some of our media content and would have gladly made a Mac version had there been sufficient demand.)

Frankly, I have to agree with Drew, the problem is on your end. I'm absolutely OS, browser, language, and application agnostic. I use whatever tool is appropriate for the job. Since I've done web development (esp. database driven) since there has been a web, among many other things, I have pretty much every browser dating back to Mosaic, in most every version. Heck, I can still fire up my Amiga browsers if it comes down to it, not that they would cope very well today. Would Microsoft prefer you to use their browser exclusively? Most certainly. However you don't have to use it and you can install any Windows compatible browser you want and make it the default. You even have the option of disabling most of IE in your settings under XP as I recall (part of the Justice Dept. settlement). You can't disable it entirely as elements are used for .CHM help files, for instance. I do introduce clients to other browsers when I work with them, but only to show them different ways of working. I don't push anyone, that's for sure. I do recommend that they use the tool(s) that are appropriate to their needs, but that's all it is, a recommendation. Nor do I spread FUD as you are doing here. Yes, there are security problems even in IE 7 under Win'XP SP2 but not nearly as bad as IE6 and the switch to Vista will only enhance that. I've been running IE for over a decade now and still have yet to have a single security breach here and all my machines are wired up like pinball machines with custom monitoring to check for such breaches. Of course, I don't go any place I don't trust and I always verify a link before I click on it. I save browsing under a VM for the unsafe locations. I also teach clients about safe browsing practices, as well as other aspects of privacy and system security, as part of the job. IE 7 is highly customizable and that will only improve now that the toolkit is in developers, individual to corporate, hands. I've customized mine quite extensively. If you were part of the early days of Firefox, especially prior to 1.0, you would remember that in those days there weren't five hundred pages of extensions. Yet you expect Microsoft to magically produce them a couple of days after release. Sheesh! And if you want to skin it, there are more than a few packages out there, free (Microsoft for the most part) to shareware, where you can skin IE and the rest of Windows to your heart's content. My desktop (WS2003 EE) in no way, shape or form looks like a stock machine and that's just as true of IE

Here are 10 good reasons to end IE: 1. Horrible layout. 2. Extremely bad Web Engine. I was designing a web page that looked awesome in Firefox and Opera and even SAFARI, but IE jacked it up all because of a missing margin that IE doesn't show. The whole header was pushed to the other side of the screen! :wtf: 3. MS is planning to make JavaScript not view in IE so everyone has to use VbScript, limiting designing capabilites for FF and Opera users! 4. You cannot customize IE or skin it (manually, not MS's skins or extensions). With Firefox, you can skin and customize Firefox anyway you want. Mozilla has a whole 500 pages of extensions people have designed for Firefox. (Let's see MS live up to that)!! 5. Annoying security alerts when downloading or even viewing a web page. 6. IE will block windows that you are trying to open thinking they are popups, but when an actual popup comes up (that you did NOT open), IE won't block it. 7. MS had to be a JERK and embed IE into windows so you cannot uninstall it. If MS didn't make an Operating System that 80% of people used, then I would switch to a Mac. But, I can't since I develope software and need to target the Majority of people which I cannot do using Mac. 8. No tabbed view of pages (IE7 has this and I heard that it locks up when switching tabs). 9. Some programs upon install, will install toolbars, menu options and ads. You cannot remove these either. 10. IE just sucks. Plus, they once made MS's website uncompatible with any browser except IE. :wtf: That's includig FF, Opera, Safari, Mozilla etc. And, Ms is monopolizing other companies. Like me for example, I am a hard working Software Developer, hoping to make a difference in the world of cyberspace someday and have my own well running company. But I don't want to buy out other buisnesses just so there's no competition! That's the whole point of a buisness. You fight for your company and you don't give up. Survival of the fitest. Microsoft just buys everyone out because they don't want people to switch to something better. What does that tell you... MS SUCKS and they don't want you to know it!! Oh man - another conspiracy rant. Did MS have anything to do with who killed Marilyn Monroe? 10% of people use Firefox - well bully for them. I like Firefox, but I also like IE (and bear in mind that my company does web development on a day to day basis, I use both of them quite heavily). If your site has CSS problems, the issue is not with MS. The quirks and issues with IE are well documented and well known. Get over it. Time to come into the real world here - things don't always work the way that we would like them, but that doesn't stop us from having to work with them. Buy a book - Eric Meyers books would be my recommendation. Tell you what - design your sites so that they can't be viewed in IE and then see how much traffic you get.

Weird.... I've got FF and I use it occasionally, but I still default to IE because I think it is better. I've got OpenOffice and I use that occasionally, but I still default to Microsoft Office becuase it is a better product. If there are better things out there then please enlighten me.

I'm not convinced IE6 is naturally less secure than FF. It is less secure in practice because malware writers target the biggest audience possible, which is IE6 right now.

Sorry but if he has tried it in three other browsers and it displays correctly, then it is IE's rendering engine that is at fault, nothing to do with his web coding skills. I agree with most of you on the other points, especially the removing of JavaScript seeing as that is used in Visual Studio and many other microsoft products where they chose JavaScript other VBScript of their own volition. So far I am hating IE7s tabbed browsing so far, the right click menu on certain links does not contain "Open new TAB" for example the "jump to new message" V link in the vBulletin software such as used in the digital spy forums. Also the open in background and foreground tab menu items just seem to result result in a string containing a GUID going in the address bar. Does anyone know of any fixes for these?

To those still using IE for anything other than WindowsUpdate ->>> USE FIREFOX! Install the "Extension" that allows you to switch to an "IE view" with one click of the FireFox Icon in bottom right corner, http://ietab.mozdev.org/. I use this for development. The IE settings can all be configured in 'Control Panel'->'Internet Options'. How? Well, on-click it switches to an IE "pane" in the Tabbed Pane. It does not affect any other panes or windows, and you can switch back with one click too. Happy Migration ;)
