UCSD takes down our TritonLink registration/scheduling/payment/etc system between midnight and 6am every day. Not quite sure why...but they state very clearly that you can't log in during those hours...
Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake. Children's ice cream.

Cal Poly and Sac State both do the same thing...

Most brazilian government turn off their websites at night, because:
- Most hacker attacks were at night
- There is an old, old law that says that government services should be available at most, IIRC, from 8am to 9pm. Some people think that computers should obey this law.
- Computers are turned off at night to save energy.
For me, only point #3 is valid. #1 and #2 seem like a poor excuse for a poor service...
From the Churchdown Parish Magazine: "Would the Congregation please note that the bowl at the back of the Church, labelled 'For The Sick,' is for monetary donations only."

Wouldn't it save more energy to use computers at night instead, during off-peak hours? If they turn them off, night owls would need to login in the day, causing more energy drain, rather than distributing some of the load at night.

Dublin City University's student portal pages seem to go down every night at about 11:30 (presumably some database machines are shut down), although the web interface stays up so you get weird messages from Oracle or something having problems with the phantom database. Pretty annoying when, for example, you have an exam the next morning and need to find out where it is :)

That's really Weird. when i was in school (USC), most of the students used to work at night and never heard of any portals or servers being shut down at night. Actually during the exam times, all the labs and 24hours library would be full at night till early morning. Ankita

Here, the whole campus shuts down at about 11:30pm and opens up around 8am (I think - can't remember ever being there that early :P). Of course, outside normal term time, labs seem to close as early as 5pm, certainly on weekends. DCU always choose the absolutely cheapest option available, often resulting in frustration from students at silly, gratuitous fines and such.

OK i assumed that Ireland would be similar system to US. I am from india and during my undergrad in india, lab would close somewhere around 5pm. And don't think anybody even ever complained about it. :) But never thought this would apply to web servers too :) Ankita
