Start putting yourself into situations that force you to use English. Start reading books/Magazines in English, watching English TV programmes, movies, listening to English music. Start talking to friends in English instead of Mandarin, this will need some corporation from your friends though. And stop forming phrases in Mandarin then translate to English.

Grammar irrelevant is. I Yoda speak like . Assimilate you will be. Now, an excercise for normal english speakers: what was used(what notation, if you want a hint) to write that?

As someone else has suggested, TV and movies can be a real big help. If you live in Guangdong you can watch TVB Pearl and ATV world where they have English programs with Chinese subtitles. If not then there's a lot of English speaking programs on CCTV9. This way you can try and understand the English while having a translation to help you out (plus you have an excuse to watch TV) A Chinese friend once told me, when questioned about their English, 'I pretend I'm in a movie, I purposefully talk with an accent'.

The answer is the same as the following question: Q: How do I get to Carnegie Hall[^]? A: Practice! Practice! Practice! You also need to learn about the culture a bit so you can understand the idiomatic references and humour. For example, the above joke. At first it looks like a request for directions to a place. However, Carnegie Hall is a famous theater in New York* where many aspiring actors wish to perform. In order for them to get on the stage at Carnegie Hall they need to practice. Also don't be disheartened when people don't understand you. Just keep practicing. We all make mistakes anyway, even those of us who have spoken English all our lives. * It also has a smaller sister in Dunfermline, Scotland - The town that Andrew Carnegie[^] was born in

True. To save the burden carrying a TV set wherever you go, listen to China Radio International(CRI).It's available at least in Beijing and Shanghai with an FM tuner. and come here frequently.:-D
